hives when new DCB came in

My son is 16 mo and just started breaking out in hives- large white welts that appear and disappear all over his body. They started appearing when I started the new DCB. Is it crazy that he's allergic to the new baby?? I can't think what else it could be and we haven't even left the house.

It could be something they are using on the baby - powder/lotion?

Give your boy some children's benedryl but call his Dr. to make sure of the dose.

It just could be coincidence. My son was about that age when he started breaking out in hives (mostly in his head) when he went outside and rolled in the grass.

I'm sure he's not allergic to the physical being of this baby, but rather some kind of scent or other that the baby brings to your daycare. Are the hives really all over his body (i.e. parts of his body hidden by clothing); or are they location specific? Are the hives in locations that your son has possibly been in contact with the baby, the baby's clothing, blanket, anything that the baby touches? Keep in mind that if it's a detergent, scent, lotion or powder that your son is allergic to; his hives could break out even from contact with the parts of your carpet that the baby has come into contact with.

How is your son on the weekends when your dck is not there? Any hives then?

I would talk with dcm; ask her what baby wash, baby shampoo, lotion, powder, detergent they use on their child. Ask her to write it all down for you. Then you could possible purchase these products (or borrow a small amount from dcm) and test them on your son one by one. It could even be a perfume that dcm or dcd wears. This would fill the air with the scent and cause an "all over the body" reaction. Now thinking about it, ask her if they use air fresheners at home as these scents could come in contact with the baby and all of his clothes/blankets, etc...

I think NannyDe has a child with a scent allergy in her daycare and she has very strict rules about anybody using scents that is in contact with her daycare. Maybe she'll chime in!

ditto lilbutterfly--sounds like an allergy to some sort of product being used on the baby, his clothing, etc. Something environmental for sure.

have you also tried any new foods with your son? Maybe you can have an allergy test done on him.

My son at the age of 18 months started to develop rashes similar to watch you are talking about and it turned out that he was having reactions to certain foods. Strawberries, bananas, pineapple, and so on.

it could be just a fluke that it started at the same time the new guy started

I don't have DCB for the next week- so that will help with process of elimination. The hives are everywhere, face, ears, butt, feet, arms, legs. they come and go really fast all day long. DCB has a dog and my son has never been around dogs before, so I'm thinking that might be it if it is new baby related.

maybe you should take your son in for allergy testing while DCB is gone next week. might help you rule out what is going wrong..

I'm wondering if they have a pet and your child is having a reaction to the pet dander?????

I don't allow ANY scents in the day care. I am allergic to scents and have a kid with allergies too.

Whatever this is.....it's toxic to your kid so figure out what it is.

One of my own children breaks out in hives if bitten by a spider.

I was told that an allergic reaction happens on or after the second exposure to a new food.
