Maternity leave

What do you all do for maternity leaves?
I have one child here already, they have already given me a 2 week holding fee for the baby to come here.
Now what do you do for the other child?
Do you set up a holding fee?
Do you charge fulltime? What if they only want 1/2 time, what would you charge?
Any comments, ????

So the sibling is already attending your DC?

I would make sure you know what schedule the family wants before they even start.

yes, there is already a sibling in my daycare.
In the yrs. prior they have always kept the sibling in my care throughout Mom being off on maternity leave.
I did have one or two stay at home with both children. I can't remember how I held the spot on the sibling, that is already in daycare.
What would everyone do?

My policy states that full time children will pay half their weekly rate and may attend 2 agreed set days each week. Max 6 weeks

I don't offer attendance during maternity leave and also pay 1/2 weekly rate max 6 weeks for those that attend part time

You don't offer fulltime care, for child that is in your daycare, while Mom is out on maternity leave at all?

First thing I would do is find out if they plan on bringing the older child during the maternity leave. I would actually prefer to have big bro/big sis coming while mom's on leave simply because it keeps the older child adjusted to daycare, keeps some continuity in his/her life, and gives him/her space away from the new crazy situation at home, something familiar and steady to look forward to, even if it's just a couple days a week.

I charge half the weekly rate and they are free to come up to two days/week (but they must be the same previously agreed-upon days each week).

if the parents pay for it yes their kid can stay full time or part time, but at the full rate.

I do charge a holding fee of $50.00 each week that in non refundable. I will also only hold a spot 8 weeks max. In my past experience I got buned doing any longer than that.

I have this situation coming up this summer. Two kids in care, mom pregnant with third. They sign a new contract with the agreed upon terms prior to the birth of the baby. They must choose three days and those days/times are contracted.

If they choose M, W, F they pay the drop-in/parttime rate for each child each day. Going from 5 days down to 3 days their daily rate actually goes up to $70/day from $59/day. They can add days at the drop-in rate, but they may not swap days. They no longer accrue vacation time during the 3 month maternity leave.

I do a considerable amount of drop-in care, and since I know this is coming I've already begun to beef up marketing to other providers that may be taking vacation this summer that I'll have availibility. $85/week is not a considerable amount to make up (two infant/toddler drop-ins at $45/day does the trick nicely). The loss of vacation accrual also nets $210, which means over three months I need to make-up $810 total.

Overall, I find maternity leave families actually pick-up enough drop-in days to cover the majority of the original shortfall. They are used to 5 day-a-week care. They like 5-day-a-week care.

Do what works for you. If you need "x" number of dollars to keep your household running then work out a contract that nets you that amount. If they don't agree, then don't hold the spot and start looking for new clients.

I treat it like any other slot. If they want the slot they have to pay the Full-Time rate. (I do offer two weeks unpaid vacation time, per year, to each family.)

The Full-Time rate is not based on attendance. They can attend as often or as little as they choose. I am available 50 hours a week.

If they don't want the slot they give it up to the next person on the wait list.

I don't hold slots or guarantee space. It has always just worked itself out without an issue. I currently have two siblings groups, all born into my daycare and I have never had to turn one away so far. Gift horse, I guess. :confused:

I don't do it to be "mean". I can only keep 6 kids and those 6 slots are what pays my mortgage, utilities and household expenses. I have 3 teenaged children of my own.

I cannot negotiate, it defeats my purpose.

Yes, this, exactly. I don't do holding fees. If you want the spot that's available you must pay the full rate. If not, then it is up for grabs. I have never lost a current family because of this policy, but they all know spots are filled quickly here.
