The Worst Field Trip Ever, Would You Make A Complaint

This past week I took my DCK to a reptile exhibit at the library. One of my DCM also went with us.

We get to the meeting area and it's really full, so we all squeeze to the front of the room and sit down. There is a man standing at the front of the room who is going to be holding the show.

After being there for about 3 minutes, I am so taken back by the host of the show that I almost left.

The man that was hosting the show was not a "child friendly" person at all. 3 min into us sitting, he must have yelled at 3-5 different children to sit down and shut up! Yes he said shut up...

He then went on to say: I have *** amount of animals to show you, but if you are not quite you can sit there and waste your own time. there will be no standing, no talking, no questions, no this, no that, no no no.

So the show finally starts and 1 min into it the man stops and starts yelling who's child is this, you need to come get your child right now, they are blocking my walk way. This happens again about 3-4 more times in less than a 5 min. Period.

He also told some stories that were way inappropriate for children. The DCM looked at me like what are we doing here. I was so shocked that our library would allow for such a person to conduct and host a show for children.

It was much worse than I can explain, would you call the library and complain? Or would you say nothing?

That was rediculous. What was he thinking?????????? I would most definitely call the library to complain. I'm sure you won't be the only one.

I would definitely call them ASAP! I would tell them how disappointed I was and that I expected a more professional AND child friendly person. I think anyone who takes an exhibit and such into a public library needs to have some patience and know how to speak to children. I would also add that I would not be bringing my daycare children back to anything that he is a part of due to his lack of courtesy and disrespect of the children. Sure it's ok to ask them to sit down and be quiet but not bark at them and use the words shut up! What if 1 of those children go home and tell a parent to shut up? Oh no u can bet your bootie I would be calling and giving them my 2 cents.

I was not too sure what to say really.... I was embarassed because the parent looked at me in major disapproval of the show. Too make up for it, My husbands best friend let us walk next door and tour the fire dept and trucks. So I was racing out of there as fast as I could. The mom and I both agreed that it was horrible and not suitable for children of any age....

That sounds horrible! I would be so bummed because that sounds like a great field trip too. Were their library staff in the room as well? You would think they would have screened the presenter somewhat, but I guess a certain level of kindness to children would be assumed. I could see him being worried if his animals were in danger from the children, but not what you are describing. Sorry you guys had to go through this

A reptile show should never have been offered to children under 5 anyway. It's not safe. I've done many shows in the past and little ones just aren't gentle, quiet and slow moving enough to be allowed in close proximity of most reptiles. I own several of different species.

So I did call and talk with the branch manager and she said I was the first to say anything about it. She did say she was very sorry and went on to say that she would be sure to inform the board that is resonsible for booking the show. She said she agreeded with me that it did not sound like it was a show for young children of any age.

I then told her that I was embarassed because I had dcp with me and they were highly upset about it. I told her to expect a letter from me and my dcp as well.

I was not too sure what else to say, other than I hope in the future that they take the time to screen their potential show host to make sure its suitable and that I will never again attend another one of their shows.... the lady did not say anthying else...

I would be asking if he was PAID to do that show since it's County funds if he is paid. Make sure he doesn't get paid to do that again.

If it was free then there's not much more you can do than what you did.

I don't think I would have stayed and would have walked out and complained before he even started.

When it comes to city/state/federal government, letters must be filed. They are recorded. Phone calls are not unless its 911.

I would complain. Libraries are gov't funded entities, and they need to know when they've done something you, as a taxpayer, don't agree with.

We have summer programs at our library, and there was one guy last summer who was just long-winded and boring. The kids were restless. He wasn't a "kid" person. Not to the degree that your guy was - as far as yelling at them, etc. - this guy here just didn't have the rapport to be putting on a show for kids. It went on and on, and the kids tuned him out. I told the lady in charge of the summer program, and she totally agreed with me and said she was thinking the same thing and would not hire him again.
