Schedule Changes...How Do You Handle Them?

I've been working for this family for 2 years. Mom and Dad both have great careers and DCB comes 4 10 hour days. I get Friday's off!

DCM has entertained the idea of leaving her job to pursue an avenue better suited for for what she went to college for. I know she's not happy with the money she's making and she's mentioned previously that she's been interviewing for other positions.

Yesterday she tells me that she interviewed for a new position that would involve child being here Fridays also. I love this family but I'm not digging the idea of DCB being here 50+ hours a week.

She said that since Friday's would need to be added to the schedule, she wanted to know how long I'm open. (Til 3pm on Fridays.) She gave me the look...the one like, "Ehh...I'm not sure that's going to work for us."

I love this family and have been working for them for quite some time. They also intend to add to their family in the near future.

She said that she won't know for about a month if she'll take the job or not but it's definitely on the table.

Do I drop my volunteer position at the school/change my hours/schedule/change doctors appointments, etc just to keep this family??? As of right now, Fridays I am off between 230 and 3pm on Fridays. 1 Friday per month I go to the school and help out, I schedule doctors appointments, grocery shop for the upcoming week, or take a couple hours to me and nap, get my nails done, tan, etc. What would you do???

do you think that you would be able to fill their spot? I know I have had a drought with being able to fill spots.

Would it be possible for the family to cut their hours in any other way? 50 hours is way too long for a child to be in DC.

Also, is the parent aware that you will charge more if fridays are added on?

How bad do you need the money?.

Honestly, you have found a needle in a haystack if you ask me. Not too many people don't need care on Fridays.

EVERY child is here 50 hours a week in my Daycare. I am talking from 6 weeks on....

8am-6pm, snow, rain, sleet, hail, or day off, if I am open they are here.

They arrive within seconds of opening time in the morning and are gone between 5-10 minutes until closing.

I have every parent in the drive in a "mass assaults" almost daily. I could not talk to them if I wanted to, luckily they prefer to speak by TEXT anyway....::::::

That IS the norm and expected otherwise I would have ZERO clients. These young Mothers are always in fear for their jobs, there is no job security anymore. Employees are disposable.

OP, I recommend calling around your area and see what your competition is offering, analyze the risks/benefits and your own families needs.

It is a fast changing culture....we have to adapt quick.
      - Unless otherwise stated, all my posts are personal opinion and worth what you paid for them.

wow, i guess it depends on your area and your clients..... maybe i should say 50 hours is way too much for me..

I think that you have to realized that at some point to stay in the game you are going to have to change your hours... When i first started I also had fridays off. then fridays until 12 and now fridays until 6pm and it's only for one family. But they are full time and I needed to keep them so I was forced to adapt. It is possible that later I will not have any kids on Fridays, but for now I have to change with the flow...
