    Chewed Through The Shirt Collar....

We have a boy, 4, in our center who has decided he will not nap. Recently he has chewed through the collar of his shirt while made to lie on his cot. His mom is convinced he is thirsty, and we got him a water bottle, but that did not seem to solve the lay down issue and not everyone can remember to give it to him. Could he be thirsty? If we allow this to continue, is it neglect? What can we do to stop it?

! Actually, it's simple. Don't make a non-napping child lie on a cot so long that they are bored out of their mind enough to chew a hole through their shirt!

Give him some books, maybe a clipboard with paper and a few crayons so he can draw quietly, ANYTHING other than making him lay there like that!

I would put him in a different spot so he isn't resting so long. Maybe while the other kids rest, he can sit at the table and do something quietly for an extra 30 minutes, then he can lie down with books or something to entertain himself with.

Then, let him get up 30 minutes early, and either help with some chore, or go back to the table to do something quiet.

Give him some pony beads and three or four pipe cleaners so he can make bracelets for you, or mom or himself.

      He could wash toys.

      He could draw.

Make goop for him to play with. (white school glue and liquid starch)

Give him a hole puncher and paper. (but the hole puncher isn't really all that quiet)

There are millions of activities that he could do, and if he gets rowdy, then it's time to lie down.
