Schools were closed yesterday and today because of the southern storms. I have almost all teacher's kids. I have a few kids who are not teachers kids as well. Usually I don't close when schools close unless there is a safety factor. Today I have teachers kids calling and texting wanting to know if I am open. I am. This is making me want to know your policies......do you close when schools close? Do parents still pay? I guess I'm a little surprised....this is the first time that teacher's kids wanted to bring their kids on the days they have off because of school closings.

I don't close unless there is no power in my home. It's 50/50 whether parents with a snow day (etc) off will bring their kids to me anyway. They pay regardless and I don't mind if they bring them. School closure days are super easy for me. Despite having 4 extra SA kids here it's less work other than meals. The big kids LOVE to play with the littles so I have 4 entertainers/playmates wearing out my preschoolers all day long. Loves it!- Flag

Same as Meyou. I love when my SA is home, she helps entertain the kids, less work for me.
I dont close for school closings. I only close for weather related emergencies, loss of power, things like that. I live on a military post, so if the base is closed for weather, then I am closed also. That being said, I have parents that work all over, so even if the base is closed, some of them still have to go into work. So I have the rule that if you have to work, then bring the kids, even in bad weather. If its bad weather, and you dont have to go into work, then keep your kids home!
Luckily most of my parents are honest and respectful of this. I think it's the first time in 5 years of care that I've had all awesome parents!- Flag

I understand what you are saying
It is now becoming the norm for parents to drop kids in daycare even if they are off work.
You have to decide if it is something that is going to really bother you or not.
It used to make my blood boil that they did not want to spend that time with their kids.
NO, I did/do not resent the occasional day to get stuff done so they have time to ENJOY their kids without housework.
I mean every time they have a day off, the full 10 hours a day while they are home, sometimes for 2 weeks straight during their vacations.
Now I have to just process it as they want their moneys worth and try not to do the math OR keep score. Some days it is easier than others.
Truth be told, I need my income, I can't change it, so I let it go.- Unless otherwise stated, all my posts are personal opinion and worth what you paid for them.- Flag

I try and keep the mentality that I'm getting paid so I expect to work. If parents keep their kids home or pick them up early I consider it a bonus or a treat. I'm much happier not dwelling on where the parents are.
I have one mom home on mat leave and her son still comes 4 days a week, 8 hours a day. She likes the quiet and can get some sleep if she needs it and he's very entertained and happy to be with his friends. Her original plan was to keep him home for her mat leave but he was bored silly and she was exhausted to tears so everyone is happier this way.- Flag

All but one of my dc families are teachers. If they are working so am I.... if the school is closed so am I. Easy-peasy.My one non teacher family is self employed and follows the teacher's schedule.

Live and Learn.....what would you do if your parents changed.....and you had SOME teachers and SOME non-teachers? Would you have a policy where kids only came when their parents were working? To me....it gives me one more thing to police. On the other hand.....some of these teachers get off work at 2:15 and don't pick kiddo up till 4:30 when I close. They come with a new hairstyle they didn't have that morning....meaning they took the time to get their hair done. Most of the time that's fine with me.....but I end up having their kids up to 10 hrs a day! So....I am in decision making mode before I redo policies in August. Contracted hours....like 45 per week then go into overtime? Or....when county schools are closed...I close? Either that....or don't let it bother me.- Flag

My own kids have tons of after school activities so I never keep kids here past 4:00. I live very close to several schools.
good luck.- Flag
