I agree with you nannyde, but i agreee with the others as well. I live in CA and just got the recent requirments for kinder... I almost fell out of my chair when I read that they are required to know forms of algerbra before entering kinder.... No joke. the example it gave is using a cherry pie with four pieces and one was missing, a child must be able to idenify that 1/4 of the pie is gone.
There are plenty of things that they are required to know these days and the pressue starts early. I am proud to say that all of my kids already meet most of the requirments to start school and they are all 3.5. But I have had them all for over a year and have been teaching them daily... don't get me wrong, we don't have class the entire time that they are here and I do focus on play throughout their day.- Flag

lmao i swear you were in my livin room right now as I just asked my husband that same question...
I belive that the children who are behind will need special help prior to state testing. I belive that the Star testing is where the standards are set with the requirments to pass the test.- Flag

The children that don't know this will probably hold the entire class time up or if they are put in groups of who knows what they will be in the lowest group until they can catch up. Kindergarden is no longer learning social skills and getting ready for first grade (when you were taught to read and learn math skills, etc.) It is now if you don't know this by kindergarden you will be in the lowest groups and continue to struggle unless you catch on pretty quick! Each day is a fresh start

There are NO requirements... preferences maybe ... but not requirements. The only requirement in my State is that they start school at age six. They don't even have to start at age five if the parent doesn't want them to.- Flag

Children in the state I live in don't have to attend school till I believe age 7 or 8 or be registered as a homeschooler by this time. I can tell you though I really think a child would be so far behind if they didn't attend kindergarden. In kindergarten is now where you learn your letter sounds, how to read, count, basic math, etc. I remember learning all those in first grade (I didn't go to kindergarten). I know some states are actually having pre-k's in their public schools so children will be in school as young as 3 or 4. If its free why wouldn't parents choose this for their child, it saves on childcare if you really think about it.Each day is a fresh start
