This is my illness policy. I have a separate section for immunizations and the medications.

    Illness Policy
If your child becomes ill during the day, I will isolate your child from the other children and call you to pick up your child. I expect you to pick up your child within one hour of my call. You are required to notify me within 24 hours if your child has a contagious illness such as pink eye or strep throat or communicable disease such as lice, scabies, impetigo, ringworm, or chicken pox. I will notify you of any exposure to contagious illness, disease, or infection in my program within 24 hours of when I become aware of it.

Children will not be admitted or will be sent home if:
    • Fever~101 degrees and up
    • Diarrhea~3 or more episodes
    • Vomiting~2 or more episodes

In the event of head lice, the child must be treated and nit-free before returning to care. If a case of head lice is found in my home, all parents will be notified and everyone in my home will be checked.

If your child has any of the symptoms listed above, he or she will not be permitted to attend care until 24 hours after the last bout of fever, vomiting, or severe diarrhea or until 24 hours after medical treatment has begun as prescribed by a physician.

Sorry SuperNinja, but there is no such thing as common sense when it comes to "some kid's parents" ::

Handbooks are an ever evolving project for childcare providers, just when you think no parent would possibly do such and such, they do! I once had a parent ask me to falsify a tax receipt to make it look like she paid more childcare fees than she actually did!
Wow that's bad! Then u would get in trouble for not reporting all income real nice lady. I had 1 of my state clients ask for a blank reciept from my book so she could falsift paying rent and get more food stamps and a bigger welfare check. I told her no way! Had she been smart she can buy receipt books at walmart!

You just learn that it really isn't about common sense. It's about money and time.

People bring their KNOWN sick kid to day care because they don't want to pay day care for a day and not get it.

Even if the provider doesn't charge for days missed they don't want to give up any of THEIR vacation/sick/holiday time for it.

Even if they have the day off they they don't want to give up any of THEIR vacation/sick/holiday time for it.

They don't want to spend the day with a a sick kid when they don't have to.

They KNOW there is a good chance that the child will get thru the day without doing one of the excludable illness things like vomiting or running a fever. If they have medication on board they have a really good chance it's not going to go up until after nap (mission accomplished). Even if they only get a few hours in before vomiting that's at least some time off (mission partially accomplished).

They know because they have brought the child to you many many times with meds on board and the kid made it thru the day and you knew NOTHING other than maybe "she's a little off".

The system of bringing the child even though they know the child is clearly ill has worked SO many times before. Why should today be any different?

They trust the provider will take just as good of care of their vomiting sick advil on board child as they would at home.

It's time to set the rules. Abigail's illness policy is perfect. When you have 3 from the same family you're a sitting duck waiting for the other 2 to come down with it.

We have sisters that occasionally one will throw up in the car on the way to Daycare. Parent will bring the one home and send the other and we cringe knowing the 2nd is horribly exposed and can errupt at any time. So far, so good though. It luckily hasn't happened.
