My DCF's mom is in nursing school & she works very pt at her convenience. For the month of April she is shadowing a nurse for the month & will be working nurse's hours. She gave me the schedule & we adjusted her pay amounts because most weeks she will only need be 2-3 days BUT the timeframes will be for 10 1/2-11 hrs b/c she is working 12 hr shifts so we adjusted it so she pays me more (I typically only watch her kids 8-9 hrs tops). Her husband will pick up when he gets off work. Anyway, she said each week she will need me 1 extra day for errands/study time. I am fine with this but she has not given me the days yet. I would like to know so I can make appts for my off-days. Is it rude for me to say I have an appt on a certain day & ask for it to not be her errand/study day? How else can I make an appt for myself?

I hand my variable hours/days clients a calendar on the last day of the month that they are here , for the next month. On it, I have marked what days/times I have roster availability - they take the calendar home and bring it back to me the next time they're here, marked with which days for the month they want to use - along with a check for all the time they're reserving.
That way, if I already have a full roster, or need time off for appts or whatever, I just mark that day/time unavailable. And by paying for the time when they reserve it - they're guaranteed the spot, and I'm guaranteed to be paid even if they cancel at a later date.- Flag

Give her a time limit when she HAS to confirm her schedule otherwise you cannot guarantee that you will be available. Also give her a list of days that you know won't work for you. Don't get too nice about this otherwise you will get taken advantage of.- Flag

Even allowing one unscheduled day per week will ultimately mean you do drop in care for her. That will mean that you won't know until the day of the day before. I would require a schedule two weeks in advance and NOT allow schedule changes. If she adds a day fine... but no switching days around. Any day she schedules and doesn't come is paid. Even if she adds another day the day she missed is paid. The added day is always extra.
BTDT and it just means that every day and every day of pay is up for discussion. Anytime she can get a free babysitter she will cancel you and want another compensatory day. It turns into even the scheduled days become up for grabs in the money discussion... not just the extra day.
End game is you have five days available to her and you get paid for two or three a week. It's drop in but sneaks up on you as part time with an extra day here and there.- Flag
