    Silly Parents

I opened the door today for my first two kids and giggled to myself. Mom is a substitute teacher and works about 2 days a week. I take her kids when I have space and her mom takes them the rest of the time. She's an old friend. She walked in with baby under one arm, a child suitcase of "gear", 2 blankies, a half eaten bottle, a sippie cup with juice, a dinky and her son's hand. She looked like she was taking a week's vacation.

I told her she didn't need to undress the kids since we were about to leave to drive my kids to school so she proceeded to pass me all the things I would NEED to go in the car with her kids....blankies, bottles, toys, drinks etc. I nodded and took the armful and she left. Then I dumped it into their bin and took the kids without any gear at all to the car. Shockingly I've managed to make it back alive with both her darlings and saved my back from carrying the load of stuff too.

It never ceases to amaze me the burdens some parents place on themselves. No wonder there are frazzled mama's out there when they feel they NEED to take half the house out with them. Plus the kid's never learn to go anywhere without 4 billion activities and snacks.

Too funny, and true! When mine were little, I used to throw a couple of diapers in a bag and go.

With my two kids (5 and 2) the only thing I carry is 2 empty cups. I put them in my purse.

we tend to just get in the car and go too. i was just thinking this weekend what a horrible and unprepared mother i am. we drove 3 hours to see my inlaws, and i didnt pack anything for the kids. i figure by 8 and 14 years old, what could they need? well, their cousins were there, and i shouldve known getting them together would mean 4 wheelers and dirt bikes and mud. needless to say, they spent the rest of the day and the drive home soaking wet and muddy from the knees down. LOL

I am just like your daycare parent. Although if I was just driving somewhere I would not bring anything. But if I have to go to the grocery store..I bring snack, blanket, toys, diapers...anything to make the shopping go easier!!

Hahaha melskids, I've had that happen to me too. I like to be prepared but you would never know it. I have a small bag with coloring book and crayons, wipes, kleenex, diapers, a small blanket, my sling, extra mittens or sunhat, 1/2 dozen dinkies and a stack of plastic cups for emergency drinks. This is the bag I use to take my 6 little ones out daily. The coloring book and dinkies have saved me more times than I can count with my own kids. I have one that is super busy and very LOUD if she's bored.

OMG, after three kids and two daycare groups I still do this when we go out. I want to kick myself when I do it too! I pack snacks, sippy cups, wipes, clothing, toys, etc. They always refuse the snacks and never need ANY of that stuff on short trips (except maybe the occasional pamper). I'm also an over-packer but I've really cut all of that stuff down significantly. I'm in recovery...::

dinkies????? I'm assuming this is a soother????

For me, when babes still in diapers I'd bring 1-4 diapers (Depending on length of being away), wipes, and that was it.

                Now that no diapers...

1-2 changes in case of accident (still new to the potty trained scene)

If we are out in the evening at families, we bring jammies for the kids to change into after supper.

I don't bring ANYTHING into my van, or into the stores. NO WAY would I consider bringing a single thing into the store with me. Not even my kids 99% of the time. Usually just me and my wad of cash. .

I used to be that mom when my kids were younger. But it got to be such a hassle. Now I just have wipes in my purse for cleaning. If the kids want to bring a toy with them, they're responsible for it and it can only be one toy. I WILL NOT carry it for them. Maybe if we're going for a long car tip (ie more than an hour) I'll pack a small snack and two covered straw cups just because that's what I bring for myself too.

I love having a real purse now instead of a diaper bag.

That being said, I have a little more packed for daycare, but that's just because it's what is required of me, like a first aid kit, diapers, that kind of thing...

Dinkies are little metal cars. Hot Wheels are brandname ones. 2 dinkies each and the kids can play for hours .

hhahaha I've never heard them called dinkies! We just refer to them all as hot wheels even though some are matchbox and other johnny lightening etc etc.

I usually bring wipes for a quick wipe up, but often forget these in the van and dont' have them anyway.

I HATE stuff left in my vehicle. And no food/juice allowed because it's messy and hard to get in the back area of the van to clean.

Maybe its a Nova Scotia thing. All my kids call them dinkies and I did too when I was small.

Well, that explains some of the odd reactions I got in forums when I said a three year old should not still have one....::::
