    Paranoid? NO!
    Responsible? YES!

I am PAID to keep these lil ones safe. PERIOD!!
No napping while I am PAID to care for my lil cabbages.

I agree, it is responsible. We are being paid to watch the kids so we should be watching them. I am just saying that the reason providers don't sleep on the job is because it's the right thing to do - not because they really are afraid that something is going to happen to the children during the hour that they are sleeping.

I disagree. I have one story in my mind that will NEVER let me go far from napping children. A center near where I live used to have the nappers in a room unsupervised once they all fell asleep. There was a staff member in the next room, but not sitting in the same room as the napping children. When it was time to wake the kids up...one did not wake up. She had passed away in her sleep. Not sure what the cause was...but I will never forget that story. I'm pretty sure that if there had been a person in the room SOMETHING would have been heard...gasping...mumbling...SOMETHING. So when I am ready to start my business I will never leave them alone...unless I have to run to the bathroom real quick and even then I can still hear them. Thankfully most of the "chores" that need to be done are in the same room.

I have another story too: I thought all of my dc kids were asleep on their cots in the playroom and was surfing on my netbook about 15 feet away from them, in earshot and eyesight, but focused on whatever I was reading online. I glanced up and saw one child (who WAS asleep) had woken up and had very quietly made his way over to another child's cot. He had taken his pillow and had laid it on the other child's head and was trying to lay his head on top . I'm guessing he was just looking to cuddle up with someone, but yikes! Of course, I grabbed him and put him back on his cot and have kept a very close eye on him ever since!

I can't imagine how far it would have gone if I wasn't sitting right there, but if I had been sleeping, I'm not sure if the "mom ears" would have kicked in .

          That is true.

I have kept DCK's overnight when a family had a crisis, once even taking guardianship....and NO, I did not stay awake for the 30 days they were in my custody before their court date...

It is just one of the things we have to do. I think it is intended to stop providers from doing round-the-clock care to minimize risk of Provider Burnout and the dangers to the child involved with that.

....well, that and somebody must have done something stupid....

My kids are little and sleep in pnp and I have a baby monitor so I can hear them. My infants sleep in cribs in the living room with me.

I read, do chores and cuddle with whichever little baby is up at the time.

My last day at my corporate job I had a lady tell me, "You will love it, I did it for 5 years and its so nice, you can sleep when they sleep." Hmmm...nope. She did daycare 15 years ago.

Sometimes a half hour after my dcks leave and hubby comes home...my butt will not leave the couch!! I am pregnant so I can get away with it for now!! hahahah
