    Napping During Naptime

In a number of threads I have seen people talking about taking a nap when the kids nap.

Is this even legal and how can you do it?

I couldnt possibly let myself fall asleep even when the kids were napping. My brain just wouldnt let my body do it. I would be too worried about a parent picking up early, a kid throwing up, an infant not being checked on enough, or someone taking advantage of my sleeping and getting up from nap and getting into trouble.

I assume those who do this wont actually admit to it anyway....

it is not legal here. I would hazard a guess that you read "rest" during nap time and are interpreting it to mean "napping". I try to rest, as in sit, not as in lay down and sleep.

Seriously?!?! Where are these threads? I just used the search function to look up naps, napping, resting and nap and I can't find one that says a provider naps at nap time. I am sure there may be providers who do but really?!? I would never even think to take a nap while the kids were napping. In my house nap time is when I do all my "work" that I can't get done while the kiddos are awake!

..... personally NEVER nap.....I HATE waking up so why on earth would I want to do that twice in one day?!?

LOL I liked this too! ::::::::::::

          I so agree!!

I clean up, prepare dinner for my family and lunch for the kids for the following day as well as do a walk about every 10-15 minutes right up to each of my children's faces to do a check on them. I do not nap!

Nap? What's that?! I think it is illegal. I recall when I was a kid babysitter that another sitter fell asleep and the home she was in burned to the ground. I think I will stay awake. I barely sleep at night when I have my own kids home.

              LOL, Exactly!!!

I've been on this board for at least a year. There once was ONE thread where a few providers said they "dozed" as in close their eyes, but still listening. Another one slept but her DH was home, so it's not like there was no one to take care of anything that would arise. The ones that did sleep pretty much said it happened accidentally and wasn't something they regularly did.
I don't recall any recent threads where anyone mentioned taking a nap when the kiddos do. I'm pretty sure it's not legal where I am, and I wouldn't be comfortable doing it anyways!

I have seen it on other forums....but not here.

My regs say the child must be supervised at all times while in care. That means while they are sleeping even if you are doing night-time care.

2nd-3rd shift providers MUST stay up the entire shift as well...

I have never in my 25+ years ever even thought about taking a nap. I have always checked on my kids every 15 minutes. I do my dishes, look on line for things to do, come to daycare.com, and read.

I don't have time to search for it now, but I do think there was a thread where a poster said that they knew someone else (another provider) who napped when the kids napped. I can't recall anyoneon this board saying that they themselves napped though.

Pardon me while I zip up...Let me first say that I DO NOT sleep when the kids nap. I don't have time to because I am busy doing some of the same things that children first does, plus reading this board. That being said, I have to ask -what is everyone so scared about? I could understand being scared about a parent showing up early or something, but being worried that someone would throw up, or not checking on an infant enough, etc? I think you would hear anything that was out of the ordinary. Technically, how would this be any different than putting your own children to bed at night? Do you get up and check on your own kids every 15-30 minutes throughout the night? Most do not and I know I don't. Unless they are sick when I put them to bed, I don't get up to check on my own after I am in bed. Our bedroom is right next to the kids and if they cried or called out for me, my "mother's ears" would hear them immediately. If a kid cries, wouldn't it instantly wake you up from a nap?

Again, I am not condoning sleeping while the kids sleep - I just think it's not as big a deal that people are making it out to be.

I feel it is because comparing raising your own children and taking care of someone elses for pay are like comparing apples to mufflers....

I do not nap when I am working. HOWEVER - I had an awful flu last fall that turned to pneumonia over the weekend. My 2 year old also had it so I had a long, sleepless weekend trying to get her and myself better after 2 middle of the night ER trips. I had my mil (my back up provider) come just during nap so I could fall asleep for those 2.5 hours. She did this for 2 days while I recovered. She just did my checks for me and 15 minutes before nap was over, I woke up and took over again. I would rather do that than close for 2 days and I know my clients appreciated that I remained open.

I guess so but a sleeping child is a sleeping child. I am just surprised that everyone seems so paranoid that something awful would happen.
