    Cradle Cap

Need a bit of Cradle Cap advice today.

The usual baby oil, warm washcloth, infant shampoo/baby brush and gentle rubbing is NOT working on this one...

It is also thicker/yellow/waxy than most I have encountered. Seborrheic dermatitis, this young??? Is it possible? Just seems off....

DCP are VERY clean and dedicated parents, not concerned about that. Baby is bathed and lotioned daily, smells like heaven and does NOT have sensitive skin.

    Anything new out there???

My oldest DD had very stubborn cradle cap. It took me baby oiling several days in a row to get it to go away, and then I really had to stay on top of it, and oil her up at the slightest sign that it was returning. She was still getting it a little bit at 3, 4, 5 years old, and by that point, her hair was so long that you couldn't see it, so we just let it go. Of course, it's gone now (she's 7), and her little sister has never even had it.

I have been gently removing it, daily, for a couple weeks, now...

Mom is also washing the hair and keeping it coated in Johnsons foam baby oil.

By morning it is starting back...

      Stubborn seems an understatement...

        I HAVE THE CURE!!!

I had same problem. And I used to do the baby oil on scalp 15 minutes BEFORE bath, then wash it out, with gentle scrubbing. Even when i'd get most of it off, it always came back.

2 days of light thin layer of vaseline, and a fine toothed comb. GONE!

Another sure cure...sounds weird but sorks miracles is Mayonaise! (not Miracle Whip) Rub it in, let it stay for a few hours (you can cover it with a hat to avoid the mess). Do this for a couple days and it will be gone! I swear this works...and it's affordable and natural!

We always used mineral oil. I suppose it is similar to baby oil, but for whatever reason we just always used mineral oil.

I could be wrong, but isn't baby oil just mineral oil with a fragrance?

Coconut Oil! I swear we use it for EVERYTHING and I've heard it does great with cradle cap too.

I feel your pain! My son is 22 months and has not been "cradle cap free" for more than 24 hours in his life! I've asked so many people what to do about it, and I've tried everything.

One piece of advice I got was to avoid oils all together. The problem is caused by excess oil, so adding oil to it (while it works to remove it) can make the problem worse. I don't know, it hasn't helped for us much, but it does kind of make sense.

I've had the best luck with changing shampoos. Instead of the lovely Johnson's baby shampoo that I was using, I've switched to either Paul Mitchell Kids or another organic shampoo. That has helped a lot, but it still hasn't cured it.

I have also tried mayo, mineral oil, baby oil, olive oil, vaseline, and the stuff they sell at BRU specifically for cradle cap (not sure of the brand but it has Pooh on the bottle). None of them have worked long term, but I really didn't like the specific cradle cap stuff-it did nothing and I didn't like the smell at all.

My poor DS even gets it in his ears! Yuck!

The vaseline was the ONLY thing that worked, and cradle cap has never come back.

All I did was rub it in really thoroughly (just tiny amount so it was like thick on the head). And then I'd let it sit for about 10 mins, sometimes even over night, and then I'd use a fine toothed comb and gently comb away the cradle cap (if it didn't lift immediately with no force, I left it, and let the vaseline the next night work at it. It may take a few days. I had one son cured in 1 night, the other was 2 nights.

I have no advice, but I have always had trouble saying or reading the phrase "Cradle cap" correctly--I usually say/read "cradle CR.A.P" first!

Typing it was hard too, .
Hee hee! Look, I have a signature!

                        T-Gel

My mom has been a hair stylist for over 35 years. She has psoriasis and has used this stuff as long as I can remember. She recommended I use it for my youngest daughter (8yo)who has always had "cradle crap" (dd's words, not mine). I started using it on her around 6months old with the permission of my doctor, and it was wonderful. She doesn't use it weekly anymore, but if she has build up (normally in the winter) we do a couple treatments a week until it clears up.

Thanks ladies! My DD is 8 and has always had this problem along with excema. Head and shoulders works somewhat but I'm going to try these. Luckily this year is was a lot milder than the past.
