    Playpen Find...

So i posted a week or so ago about sleeping arrangements for my little ones and wondering about the laundry basket idea. I went shopping this weekend and found this on markdown at our walmart, they didn't have any left in a box, so I bought the display which gave me an additional 20% off. I ended up getting it for $42, the original price was $70
They had another one on markdown as well, I think I may go buy it too as one of my other playpens is quite old. Anyway, just thought I would share. When there's none left in a box, ask for the display!!

Baby won't be sleeping in a laundry basket

Haha, I am glad you found a nice PnP at a great price. I would consider buying the other one too and keep the old one for back-up or emergencies (like a dear little blow-out that you have to scrub out. I know, it happened to me once )

I have one. Love it, but watch out for the wheels. It will move really easy if the child rocks it a little.

Oh I'm so curious... can you measure the depth of the inside of the pack n play?

Inside the pnp from the top of the mattress pad to the lowest point of the top railing. It looks like the four corners have rising shoulders. I'm interested in the measurement from the lowest point of that railing to the mattress pad.

It says it's 31 inches high but I'm wondering how much of that height is the legs, mattress thickness and the elevated shoulders at the corners.

The most important dimension is the INSIDE of the playpen from mattress to the lowest point of the railing.

I'm going to guess 20 inches high inside the playpen.

I don't have it set up today as I don't need it, but when I do I will let you know.

It has an extra insert that you can use if your using it for a tiny infant, maybe that is what you are concerned about? It has a section that hooks over the sides and creates a higher bottom so little bitties aren't so far down. I wouldn't use that section unless an infant is not rolling yet. It is an average depth playpen without the insert in it, it just has two ways you can use it.

I use playpens for 6 weeks to 18 months, depending on the kiddo, sometimes by one they are on a mat, sometimes a little later. Just depends.

No I'm not interested in the basinettet part. I'm interested in the depth of the inside of it without the bassinette.

I'm just curious. I've seen some as shallow as 19 inches. The more shallow they are in the inside the younger the kid is that can be in them. I've seen in my career the pnp's getting more and more shallow as the years go by so I'm interested in a 2010-11 version.

Curiosity got the best of me.

From the top of the mattress to the top of the lowest rail is 22" The two ends that are higher are 25"

I bought another playpen a few months ago and that one is 21" It is a Graco.

I have another one as well, but it is a pain to set up. I will measure it next time I have it up and see if there is a difference as it is 5 years old...

                    Nannyde,

I just measured 6 of mine, all purchased in the last year, 3 Cosco/3 Graco and ALL were 20inches high inside.

The bassinets that clip up top on the rails were all 6 inches high inside.
                    - Unless otherwise stated, all my posts are personal opinion and worth what you paid for them.

Okay, now I am curious about all mine too...

I measure my newest (purchased last year) it is 21 inches from mattress to top of rail; same on all four sides. It is a Graco PNP 932 series.

My oldest (purchased over 10 years ago, but very well made obviously) is 25" inches from mattress to top of rail; same on all four sides. It is a Century Elite brand.

Is there a standard or are PNP's just not as nicely made as they used to be.

The children seem to be getting bigger and all the equipment s getting smaller..WTH is up with that?!!?!?

The equipment is getting smaller (shallower) which means the safe time for use of the equipment is getting younger and younger. The manufacturers save money on materials and they have less liability for the quality of the equipment. If the kids can't use it past 12 months or so then they have a much less liklihood of tearing it up.

It's not just pnp's... it's highchairs, exersaucers, swings, potty's etc.

Soon enough there won't be any choice but to put 12 month olds on mats at nap. The equipment will be dangerous once they are able to pull up.

They aren't just smaller but the quality of the meshing, velcro, vinyl, plastic, etc. is getting lower and lower. Besides the shallowness of the equipment the other really big difference is the hardware (clasps and belts). We will see much less available for resale because they won't live long enough to be passed down or sold to someone else.

I've been buying equipment for 17 years and the quality and size of what is available now is very very low compared to even ten years ago. I saw it coming and stocked up on the major pieces I need (exersaucers, play pens, and toys). I think this generation has become used to things not living very long. I still have the very first exersaucer I ever bought for the day care. I still have the first high chair and swing. I have the original toys I had when I first opened up.

Yup that was about right for that time.

The Jmasons I use are 26 inches deep. That is the difference of a full year of growth of a toddler. My kids sleep in the same playpen from birth to age 3.5 plus...

They outgrow it by length not depth.

I can't IMAGINE having one, two and early three year olds on mats. I've never had to do that. In the olden days the playpens were deeper and then in the early 2000's Jmason built the best playpen I've ever seen. Deep, long, awesome materials, and no V collapsing side rails, and no corner shoulders for them to use as a post to pull up and over with.

It's funny because the European models of Graco's were much deeper than what we had here. I took my son to Germany, Amsterdam, and Paris when he was little. The playpens from the hotel were really deep and long... but very narrow.

The width of it doesn't really matter... it's the depth... then length that allows for it to be safely used for older babies and new toddlers.
