Paint color ideas?

For my wooden kitchen set.

It's something I built myself, about 8 years ago. I regretted painting it white immediately. Now it looks more yucky than white (which is especially apparent since I painted my walls white)

My ideas-
gel stain (just did my bathroom vanity in an espresso color)
black, keep the silver hardware
some light cute neutral color (NO PINK), changing hardware to white?
bright red, retro style
each piece a different color (red fridge, blue stove, green sink?)

I open in a week and I can't make up my mind.

Personally I like the idea of the espresso color. I would find anything to light or dark like black can show to many marks so fast with something that can be played with a lot. Also for me with the big pices in the room I like to stay away from to much color since toys themselves can have so much color.
When I first opened I put down multi colored foam floor mats and used multi coloured party tubs to sort toys. Day after day I began to hate to colour over load. Now I have foam mats in to colours (only cause the 2 colour packs were on sale and the single ones were much more $) and black shelving. My kitchen has color (plastic one but got it free) one dsy when it wears out I'm going to go espresso wood myself.
