I had to term a long time client today and gave them a three week notice. I stated back in June that this might be a possibility come September as they are a full time family who decreases to part time each summer. I cannot guarantee their full time spot all summer. Anyway, I feel badly but they were not happy and said this was "short notice." I only ask for a 2 week notice from parents when they leave so I thought 3 weeks was very fair. Now I'm the jerk right? How long do you give for term notices?

What does your contract say ?
Also I have the same problem over summer and basically started requiring parents to resign at the end of May for the summer and up coming school year otherwise I consider it their 30 day notice if they don't resign. Then at that time I fill the spot.
I don't close over summer and parents know it's a full expected scheduled. All year around.- Flag

My contract states 2 weeks. I had one parent negotiate for 3 weeks (and ironically did not use them when I termed!).
If it is a good family I will officially say this is your two week notice but let them know that if they need more time I am more than happy to help. I have offered this to two families and neither took the offer.
3 weeks seems more than fair to me so don't worry about it!- Flag

3 weeks is very nice ... it's one week more than what the typical term notice period is which is typically 2 weeks. She has the rest of this week to reach out and schedule interviews and has weekends.
I bet if you would have given her a month that still wouldn't be enough for her- Flag

My notice matches up with me payments.
I charge monthly, require them to give me one months notice. I don't have in my contract how much notice I would give them but I would like to give parents 4-6 weeks if possible because it may take that long to secure something else in my area. That said sometimes an immediate term might be needed.- Flag

Thank you all! I looked at my calendar and its actually exactly 3 1/2 weeks notice that I gave. I guess I shouldn't worry about it. I thought most providers gave 2 weeks. As a provider you know you're always going to be the "bad guy" when parents don't get their way I guess. We also run the risk of losing more $$ by giving more than a 2 week notice as well because they typically pull the child asap afterward. Which will most likely be the case here. As I attempted to give the notice I was told they were taking 2 weeks off at the months end. (Nice notice to me right?)Well I feel better knowing at least! Next week will probably be the last.- Flag
