    Pet Emergencies?

What do you do in the case of pet emergencies? Is it in your contract? My dog just went into a very bad seizure and I didn't know what to do but load the kids in my van to get to the vet. I do have transportation permission and room for all of my kids, but I don't think I ever want to try to manage my dcks and a seizing dog ever again.

    Oh no! I'm so sorry, I don't have a pet so I don't really know what I'd do. I hope everything's okay.

Do you have relatives or friends nearby who are available during daycare hours in case of pet emergencies? What about your emergency backup? My dogs are my kids and if they started having seizures, you can bet I'd be calling my emergency backup to either watch the kids while I went with the dog, or have the backup take the dog to the vet.

I've tried taking my own two children to the vet with me before and it was such a hassle. I can't imagine how you got all those kids and your poor dog to the vet!

      Hope he's feeling better!!!

I called my vet and had one of the techs pick up my dog before. I just offered them $100 extra and they came fast.....

How scary!! I never even thought of what to do if something happened to my pup while I had dc kids here. Guess I should think about it. I hope your pup is doing better soon! Do you know yet what caused the seizure?

I never thought of it! UGH, but I like the idea of the vet picking up, that was nice and I would pay the extra too. I hope your dog is ok though.

              Hope your dog is ok!

I would probably ask my neighbor to sit with the kids until my hubby got home. Luckily my vet is only about a mile away.

I do have backup, but didn't think to call them for my dog, our agreement is in the case of a serious instance with a child, like ambulance serious. I didn't think to ask if the vet if they could come to my house but IF I have to do this again, I may try.

He is still there, they want to monitor him for a while. I'll go back when my daycare families are gone. We think it was a motor seizure because he didn't seem disoriented but lost all muscle control after he pooped and threw up. I am still anxious about it.

I have never thought of that before. I don't know what I would do. But, I did want to tell you that I hope your pup is okay! I have an epileptic dog, and the first time we saw a major seizure we thought he was dying...so did the vet...they thought he broke his neck because he couldn't move at all. It was very scary, but he is medicated and fine now. Hope he's okay.

Awwww! I hope your dogs ok! I wouldve freaked out as our one cat is known to have spur of the moment issues. Never thought what would happen if he went into something like this either. Hope you can get out and hes ok

I'm so sorry to hear about having to load all the kids up and bring them to the vet too...I'm sure they asked a lot of questions and you're all concerned and he is still in the clinic. HUGS

My DH and I had to bring our cat to the emergency clinic a few days ago and he's better, but suffered from a urinary track infection. I would have no idea what to put in my handbook about pet emergencies. My cats are my babies and I get really worked up with something happens to them.

Does anyone have any wording recommendations for pet emergencies? I know most of the time my DH should be home and could take our pet in right away. If not I guess if I could fit the kids in my car, maybe I would have a note on the door saying we're at the vet and have the address posted? LOL

Thanks for the well wishes. He spent the afternoon at the vet and picked him up not too long ago. I will get a call when his tests come back and go from there. There are so many things that could cause it.... It's watch and wait game for us right now. I've started a seizure journal to track any seizures he has to try to see if there is a pattern.

My dog had "Vestibular Disorder" from an inner ear infection. She appeared to have a seizure, lost bowel function, could not walk at all for a day or two then walked in circles for weeks and had a severe facial droop on one side.

They can scare you to death, they really become part of the family.

I hope yours feels better fast!

I hope your dog is ok!

I really wish I had read this thread when it first popped up.

I had a pet emergency tonight. I had a mom here (for pick-up) and another girl waiting. We live out in the country, speed limit in front of our home is 55. We had an outdoor only cat, Ernie. The kids were looking out the window laughing at the cat because he was flipping and it looked funny. I realized that his back legs looked broken and left the mom in while I went out to check on him. My 15 yr old daughter would have probably fainted.

Looked like and acted like he got hit. DC Mom offered to stay while I brought him to the vet. Called, they were closed. The emergency vet they had listed was over 1 hr away. I called them and they gave me some numbers closer.

Needless to say our Ernie suffered a broken spine, severed spinal cord, broken ribs, punctured lung(s) and possible head trauma. The only decision was to put him down. The kids that were here all petted him and told him goodbye before I left with him.

I am ever so grateful for this particular daycare mom. She is an amazing woman.
Give a little love to a child, and you get a great deal back.
