Favorite Authors? DCF Asked Today Where Another DCC Went

Shall I tell them the truth why this other child no longer attends or use a generic "one size fits all" phrase?

"I'm sorry but I can't discuss other families. I'm sure you understand."

    My standard reply.

I live in a small town, so it probably depends on why the family left. If they were termed or something else unpleasant than I would say something similar to Blackcat. If they moved, then I would let the family know they moved.

I was asked after terming a family and without putting much thought to it, I said - "Their contact ended." The DCM asking never questioned it.

(I advertise that I allow short term care, so once there contact is done, they are gone)

I'm honest. If they were terminated then I say, "It wasn't a good fit." If they moved then I say, "They moved." It hasn't bitten me in the rear yet.

Ditto here. I have had to tell other families when I was asked why a child was no longer with us because their child was asking, I would tell them the truth. Just short sweet and simple answer, they were not a good fit for our program and say no more. I think this also helps set the tone to let parents know that I am going to enforce rules and I do have expectations from them and their children.

I also live in a small community and I see all of my families out and about, so I always do my best to keep things as professional as possible no matter what. I also don't want to seem like I am hiding anything, so I feel the truth is best..

Usually my kids KNOW why that child is no longer here. They'll be the ones to answer the parent and say things like, "They were MEAN!" or "They hurt us!" etc. I love that they're so honest. I nod and say, "They weren't a good fit."

I'm also in a small community. Funnily enough, we run into the terminated families twice as often as we run into families who have aged out or are currently enrolled. ::
The truth is best over here, too. The terminated families don't seem to last long here (this year I haven't had any thus far - YAY!) and they then try to spread false information about my program. Since it IS a small community, folks take up for me and my program and it does help that they know they were asked to leave (and THAT is the reason they are spreading false rumors).

That is a good point :

This is pretty much what I do. Same thing- small town, it's probability going to get around anyway.

It depends on the situation for me. Small community here as well so most clients know why others left. But when I terminated the family that would not let me feed their children, she spread some untruths in the school system. They all knew me and when asked why xxxx had taken her kids out of my daycare, I replied with "she didn't take her kids out, I terminated her" and nothing else was said. I didn't go into specifics but I will defend myself!
