For me its a 50/50
It depends on the child moods, Appetites ok?, Runny nose? and is able to function with the daycare.

How do you know it is from teething? Generally, a fever means your body is fighting infection. I am not a doctor, so whether teething or the flu...I don't know what it is, therefore they get excluded. I exclude for temps above 101.

I used to preach that teething doesn't cause fever....then I had one of those kids.


Bottom line though, is it's a judgement call. So if it's a kid that I know well, and I know this is their pattern, I'll have parents give motrin at drop off so they aren't in pain or feverish during daycare and I'll accept them.

Nope. I sent a little one home on Monday for 101.4 NO other symptoms. Happy, playing and eating perfectly normal.
Mom was positive it was an ear infection he has been battling. Tubes on June 13 so we just need to wait it out....


...Mom picked up. Took babe to Urgent Care.
Imagine her surprise when babe is diagnosed with strep.

I would never assume it's teething.

I might consider keeping a teething baby with a fever of 99 if there are no other symptoms. Once the fever goes above that, I send the child home - symptoms or no symptoms.

I tell parents that pediatricians say that teething does NOT cause fever, and that kids are excluded for fever regardless of the reason.

I have one child with medical issues where a fever under 102 is usually nothing, and with that kid (since he nearly always has an elevated temp), we use fever AND other symptoms to decide. His mom has never questioned me when I've suggested he needs to go home.

Nope... My policy is too exclude for anything over 100.5 regardless the reason. Usually that high of a temp means an infection somewhere, not a tooth coming thru... I also send kids home for supposed teething diarrea

Thanks y'all! I really appreciate your feedback on this! The mother picked up and will be taking him to the dr today. Just seems like teething is the excuse around here for everything lately

Any fever over 100 is an automatic go home, anything over 99.5 is a go home if the child is under 1. A baby died of pneumonia in a local daycare recently. I am being very vigilant.

Yep, except it's over 100 for here!

I can't tell you how many times I've been told it's one thing and then every other child got infected in the beginning.
