Do you all do anything for Groundhog Day? I want to do something, but I haven't quite figured out what besides telling them about it, talking about the weather, and showing them their shadows. Any other suggestions?

I've seen very cute crafts with a paper cup or paper towel/toilet paper tube and a little groundhog on a craft stick. Cut a hole in the bottom of the cup (which is the top of the craft) or just use the tube. Then the groundhog on a stick can "pop" up to see his shadow. It would be easy to make yourself, but I'm sure you can find a pattern if you google it.- Flag

Maybe doing some activities with flashlights and shadows? Flashlights in a fort if it's too cold to go outside where you're at. Have the children make some shadow puppets.
You can mark on a calendar when the groundhog says winter will be over with, then when the time comes you could check it with the children and see if he was right.
Have the children make their own predictions about when they think winter will be over with. Make a chart of their ideas and compare them with the groundhog's predictions.
Maybe do some research on groundhogs, so that you can talk to them about groundhogs a little, what they eat, where they live, etc.
ETA: If it snows where you live you can bring some snow in from outside and some play animals and pretend to have the animals pop up out of the snow like the groundhog and predict when winter will be over with.- Flag

We'll be making groundhogs in their burrows using construction paper and painting the groundhog with halved potatoes. We'll also have groundhog day cupcakes - almond joys with ears and cheeks made using mini M&M's. I stick these out of the cupcakes. Really cute and well loved!- Flag

I'm going to trace their shadows so they can color (maybe paint) them. It's suppose to be about 70 tomorrow so as long as the rain holds off, it'll be our outside activity.
There's a whole section of teacher ideas here:

I have sooo many cute crafts and coloring pages and I get so excited to take them out and color with the kids BUT my dcks hate coloring.....does anyone else have trouble getting them involved? I have a great groundhog pic for tom but not sure I will go to the trouble....maybe I will just color it. haha- Flag

Oh, one more thing we will be doing. I am filling the sensory table with corn meal (you can also use sand or dirt if you are daring) and filling it with empty paper towel and toilet paper rollls and small animals. I think I have a gerbil, some hamsters, a ferret, and some mice...but they won't care! They love digging, building piles, having the animals go through the "tunnels."- Flag

I forgot something else! A nice kid-friendly video is Bambi II. There's a scene about the groundhog in it that explains the whole thing and it's just adorable. For those of you who put videos on during transition times. My kids are watching it right now as I make lunch.- Flag
