    Bedtime Drama!

I work for a center that is open in the evening. We do a 730 snack, then teeth, pjs and bed. Most of the children fallow the routine and will lay nice on there cots. I have one child who will jump around, talk to herself and just generally be disruptive. Most nights shes not going to sleep till 10! Ive talked to mom about this and she says "oh they sleep alot during the day." If i let her up to do quiet activites she will run around and try to wake the others (who are in a room with a half wall and gate (totally in sight). Im at a loss with this child. Ive tried the if you sleep you get a sticker idea, If you sleep mom will be here when you get up, ect. Any ideas of what I can do to make things work better? We dont have the same kids each night and lately have only needed one teacher (so much better with 2). Maybe we need a new routine? Any ideas?

This will have to change before you make any progress. I would suspect that she is sleeping on the same schedule as Mom during the day, which means she's simply not tired. Either you will have to adjust your schedule or she will have to be kept awake during the day (or both). You can't expect the child to sleep all the time, this is an issue that you need to address with mom (it is rough when mom works all night and has to sleep sometime as well).

I've been in a similar situation and in the end we had to compromise, mom got the child up earlier in the day (than say, lunch time) and I kept the child up slightly later at night.

Mom works overnights? Why doesn't she keep the children with you in the morning, say until lunch time and you get them up a decent time, Mom gets sleep, and everyone is on a better schedule.

Mom sees nothing wrong with there scedual. I get the feeling she relys on other household members to handle the kids. The 3 kids are dropped off at 530 just in time for dinner, then they get playtime (till 715) table toy time (715-745) snack (745-755) and then its pjs and teeth (755-810ish) then bed. I work at a center so theres no real flexability. Bedtime is 815 thats a non negotiable. I know that most nights if she will lay still shes out in 15 mins. It just makes me crazy! I would be thrilled if she would just rest quietly and I would let her get up after 30 mins, but when I do that Mom gets mad that shes not getting enough sleep. the other two children (2, and 1) sleep just fine.
Our daycare is open till midnight, and these kids get picked up by 1145.

I would give the child 30 minutes to fall asleep, and then if child is still awake I would call parent for pick up. If parent wants child to attend your daycare then she will ensure that the child is on a schedule that has the child sleepy at the centers bedtime.
