Native American Books

[Controlled Chaos]

I would like to read books about native American legends and culture in November. Does anyone have any book suggestions. Most books tend to by for grade school children. I am digging through online lists looking for some younger ones. Not too much luck...

They are too young for the complexities of colonization but I don't want to give them the "Columbus discovered America and the indians were so grateful" bit

I would love book suggestions!

I ended up getting older books geared toward elementary ages children and broke the books down into easy to understand terms and ideas for my kids. I remember instead of just reading the book we looked at the pages/photos and discussed how different tribes ate different food, made different homes, wore different clothing, etc.

That's a good idea. There are sooo many good older kid ones.

The rainbow bridge by Audrey wood is about the Chumash legend describing the people and how the goddess saved them and some of them turned into dolphins (its not the rainbow bridge thing about pets that die). It's considered appropriate for 3-5 year olds. Could be a tad boring for younger. Chumash are our local native Americans where I am. Kids seem to love the story but it might be because it's very common here and you see it represented in sculptures and art downtown and everything.
