Yeah-I'm Not Gonna Be Doing That

Today mom arrived with preschool dcg3. She had a stuffed puppy in a baby sling on her and a tote bag with accessories and a notebook. Mom informed me that "cupcake" is a preschool "pet" that each child takes home and completes a paper on his activities and keeps a log. He needs fed every four hours. A nap. Played with and read a book (which was in bag). Considering that dcg is 3-that means someone would be keeping the log for her and reading the story to cupcake. Mom spent a good five minutes explaining the duties of caring for Cupcake. She was dead serious about me doing this horsecrap for a STUFFED ANiMAL! Looked her straight in the eye and said "yeah-that's not gonna happen".

I would have said "Sure, no problem. My rate is $160/week".

I thought my difficult parent situation today was stupid, but mine is ungrateful. Your situation is stupid. Difinately NOT in the job discription. Do you have a no bringing toys into day care policy?

      I love your reply!

          Haha, perfect response!

OP, what was mom's response when you told her it wasn't going to happen?

ETA: did she explain why she wanted you to do this with "cupcake"? It's such an outlandish and idiotic request I am curious as to why mom wanted it done.

Mom acted amazed that I wasn't going to do it. I do have a no toy policy, but mom said she thought I would bend the rules for this occasion. Nope. Im sure she thought I was being rigid and uptight-maybe her and my ex husband can start a club :-)

Some parents are crazy! Reminds me of the parent that tried to get me to teach her child to read when she was only with me for an hour a day. Ummm sorry mom that is your job!

"absolutely!! This is a great project. But we need to discuss my rates for this type of request. I'm thinking an extra $80? You can write me a check but I prefer cash. "

DS has had to do something very close to that for 1st and 2nd grade.

Why for a 3 year old??? I'm so confused.

We do it in our 3s and 4s classrooms. It's a not that involved though. They take the thing home one weekend, snap some photos of the toy with the kid doing their regular weekend stuff, and slap the pics in a word document with a cute paragraph. The kids live for their turn.

I'm looking forward to getting to do one this year.

I had a DCK have this same "assignment" for preschool.

My kiddo was an older pre-k student though and was perfectly capable of taking care of her own "buddy".

The only thing I did was snap a few cute pictures of DCK and "buddy" doing a couple activities together and shared them via text with the parent.

It wasn't a big deal and added a lot of conversation and 'like' stories to the day. The kids were all inspired to talk about their adventures with pets, friends and family etc. and all the places and things they did together.

Gave us a lot to think about in regards to what we wanted to learn about the next week. I think it's what sparked our Trip Around the World unit.

When dcm shows back up, 'I'm so sorry dcm but Cupcake ran out the door right as you left; I guess you didn't see her? And miraculously she just showed back up on our doorstep a minute before you pulled in!'

:: I had a mom who's job was doing some type of drawing contest. She wanted me to "assist" her 20 mos old dcb in drawing his mom and dad at work on a construction site. She was really going into details on what she wanted in the picture. I don't know if that project ever got done but I do know it didn't get done here.
