Food Program Question: Two fruits allowed?

At the last CACFP training, I learned that lunch/dinner now has to be one vegie and one fruit, so that two fruits are not an option any more. Does anyone know if they actually disallow a meal if you did two fruits?

I had a day last week where I was wiped out and it was easier to serve two fruits in a smoothie rather than find a vegie that would work, and I'm wondering if that meal will be disallowed. I know I could call my rep, but I wanted to ask here. Does anyone track their claims carefully and know if it would be disallowed?

I didnt think the new rules went into effect until 10/2017?

I do know it days ALL 5 components must be served in order for the meal to be credible so even if you served 6 fruits, you would still be required to have a vegetable. Certain veggie juices will count but not a veggie and fruit drink at the same time.

My understanding is that you can serve two veggies, but must also serve a vegetable for the entire meal to be allowed. I do not receive reimbursements, but am required to follow guidelines and post menus.

      * I often serve two fruit or two veggie choices just to make sure the kids eat well. Example: Some kids prefer sweet potato slices to carrot's. Both meet the beta-carotene goal for me. I don't care which one they eat.

There is a lot of grey, that the food program seems to ignore, like tomato paste/slices count as veggies even though they are fruit. ::

I just went to my annual CACFP training yesterday and BC is correct. The new meal patterns go into effect on 10/2017. We also learned that firm or extra firm tofu (at this time only this one certain brand, House Foods, is creditable) is now okay to serve as a protein alternative.

And another reason I am not on the food program... I and at least one daycare kid cannot have SOY as an alternative protein; I know how to make Burmese Tofu (made from chickpea flour); works well for scrambles etc, but they wouldn't allow it

THANK YOU to you all. I missed the part about 10/2017. Wow, they're sure giving us a lot of tiime, huh? And yet I still feel a bit confused at times by their rules.

Tomato Paste Slice??? What is this? Just canned paste sliced? I have never heard of doing this.

Tomatoes I learned are technical a fruit based on how they grow however back in the 50's or 60's or something, the government passed a ruling to catorgorize them as a veggie. Why they felt this was important, is beyond me. Maybe they were bored. But I grew up calling them a veggie not a fruit.

Yes I recently had my FP rep come out and give me the rules. I was a bit puzzled thinking that they were to start soon. I can't wait until protein can be given for breakfast or the new infant age groups for feeding.

I think she means tomato paste OR tomato slices

I read it as a short cut to not having to type out the word tomato more than once.

Oh good because that just sounded gross and messy, too messy.

My program told us they want us to implement these changes starting THIS year so we are all on board next year. Why do we need a year notice to be going with? I'm am intelligent woman. I get it. I can change it up with a lot shorter notice.

                          :::: Yes, either/or.

I feel the same way about canned cranberry "sauce". Should say "molded cranberry-ish slime served sliced" :dislike:.

Our program is encouraging starting now as well.
But, I get it. They are still catching providers serving whole milk to preschoolers and being told "they didn't know" when called out. Unfortunately the "LCD's" (lowest common denominators :: ) ruin it for the rest of us.
