Usually the conversation goes something like this.
Dck: what is this?
Me: baked chicken.
Dck: it doesn't look like chicken... I don't like it. I only like chicken nuggets.
Me: it's just like chicken nuggets but without the breading.
Dck: chicken nuggets? Like From McDonalds?
Me: ...Sure. But it's even better than McDonald's chicken.
Dck: ok! (Eats it) this is the best McDonald's chicken nuggets I've ever had!
Me: 😎
Never gotten to the part that it's from a chicken. If I can get them to eat it then I call it a win.- Flag

two of my enrolled kids have parents who are farmers. They TOTALLY get it. The rest----not so much.- Flag

I grew up on UC Berkeley's Poultry Plant. I never questioned it. My son on the other hand had a sudden realization......you mean chicken comes from......chicken??????- Flag

My son always wants to know what his food is. He's come to the conclusion that a lot of things are cow and a lot of things are chicken. I think it hit home after he took a visit to my brother-in-law's farm and saw chickens. Then later in the week I mentioned we were eating chicken that his uncle gave us.- Flag

I'll never forget when my oldest was like 3, the subject came up about bacon and I told him bacon was pigs. He said, "What! I love pigs!" So here, I got a little worried for his reaction, but then he went on to say, "Pigs are delicious! I eat pigs everyday!". That was unexpected. Here, I thought he was going to be upset. Ha! -CalCare- Flag

I am big on if you eat an animal you should respect where it came from, so we make a big point of talking about where the meat we are eating comes from and how it came to be on our plates. I mean, I don't read them The Jungle quite yetbut my 3 children know where different cuts of meat come from on the animals body. My DH's grandma lived on a farm and he's a chef, and I grew up hunting and processing my own meat. So it seems natural. I am not so explicit with dcks, but we talk about being grateful for the farmer who raised the cow, so we can enjoy these delicious burgers

I know my son does-my husband is a hunter and my son loves to eat duck and goose (ick-I can't eat either!). When geese fly over our house, my 4 yo yells at his dad to "shoot 'em, shoot 'em!" because he wants to eat them. He had a bit of a hard time with fish because he was a big fan of Nemo, but after seeing the fish before cleaning them, he apparently was able to separate Nemo from a Walleye, because he happily eats Perch and Walleye now.- Flag

Heck, I'm not so sure *I* know where they come from because I surely wouldn't be eating a burger while looking in the big brown eyes of Bessie.Somehow I have been able to separate that fact from the raw meat in the store.
Sometimes while we're eating we'll have discussions about what animal gives us milk, eggs, hamburgers, etc. I haven't had anyone horrified so I'm thinking they separate it in their mind like I do.- Flag

Considering I've had chicken at least once a week with cute little baby chickens in my house with no problems I guess they either don't make the connection yet or just don't care. My daughter says we keep "pretty" chickens and eat "ugly" ones, so that's how she separates it.- Flag

My son gets it. We were at the store recently and we were walking past the meat section and he yelled "Mom look at all that meat, they are killing everything" ::

My five year old is just making the connection a few months ago. But my parents have chickens that he plays with, and we just got a pet fish in the daycare.
Both foods are staples at the dinner table. It doesn't seem to be bothering him though.- Flag
