    I'm Making Myself Crazy!

5-month-old girl has started turning from back to tummy when I put her to bed. I know it's supposed to be safe if she's turning herself, but I am so paranoid--I keep checking her over and over. A couple of times, her head wasn't quite turned all the way to the side, so I adjusted it, which woke her up. Once, she was practically face-down. I wasn't able to get her to turn her head, so I carefully turned her onto her back, which of course woke her up and made her scream.

I haven't had an infant in over 3 years, but I don't remember being this way with the last one! I think part of it is that my daughter is due any day with her first baby, and I've already started worrying about SIDS....I guess it's just on my mind lately.

In my state we are now required to have a parent sign a form acknowledging that their infant rolls, if they are under six months old. Otherwise we have to turn them back to their backs.

We don't have that regulation (yet), but dcm and I have discussed her turning over to sleep. I'll just keep watching her.

This is the one reason I really don't care to take infants. I love the babies, but it has gotten to where they scare me. I was bad with my own, I can't tell you how many times I got up at night to see that they were breathing, and the last one of those was 18 years ago, and since then you hear more and more about SIDS and such.

I had said I wouldn't take them anymore, but when our dd told us she is pregnant, of course I changed my mind for my grandbaby. I have this one now temporarily, just until dd needs the spot. Her parents know this, so I hope they are looking for new care!

It is extremely rare for a child to die from suffocation in a crib if they can turn their own bodies. I understand the scare but if something were to happen it would not be your fault and it would mean that it could have happened anywhere. SIDS is also really rare. I remember when I became a new mom the midwife gave me a pamphlet on it and it scared me to no end. First of all it is very rare and I didn't fit any of the "risk factors" which I am sure you don't either.

Worrying is not a healthy thing to do in this situation. As long as baby is in a crib without loose bedding and stuffies etc. She is safe!

Just to put it in perspective - Out of roughly 4 million babies born each year in the USA only about 3500 die of SUIDS (sudden unexpected infant death syndrome). So that is 0.08% of infants die. Less than 1%. It is scary and it is sad but it is extremely rare!

Thank you! That does make me feel better.
