Also the only cream I've found to not affect absorbency is California baby. This site has a list of whether it is cloth safe or not.

I've used A & D ointment without problems. And I've used "bad" ointments with a cloth wipe as a liner to protect the diaper. If you don't have cloth wipes you can fold washcloths to the right size/shape, but they'll be bulkier.
