Hi guys, I have a little guy (13months) who naps wonderfully for me. He usually sleeps 1.5-2hrs 2x/day, and actually asks to go down. Well this morning his mom texted saying due to many very early wake ups the last few weeks, they've decided to go to one nap and while at the moment it's earlier than our group nap they'd work at moving it later. I'm thinking that sleep begets sleep and shortening daytime rest won't help him sleep longer through the night. I'm thinking the early rising may be due to teething? Also, he seems young to be dropping a nap but I'd love to hear all your wonderful advice. I won't change our whole schedule this last minute and he asked me for a nap this am so he's currently snoozing but I do want to work with the family. I just don't know that this is the right answer for them and I definitely don't want to throw the whole group's schedule off for no good reason! Any advice? Thanks!
Switching to One Nap

When I ran my daycare everyone went to one nap at my nap time.Parents could not dictate the time.I would often start outside time with a short walk. The 12 month olds often fell asleep during walk.I would let them sleep for 30 -45 min tops.Awake by 10 am.That way they were ready for nap right after lunch.- Flag

You could shorten the morning nap but I believe that his bedtime should probably be made later which isn't your problem. Parents don't make the connection of their child getting older therefore needing less nighttime sleep. However, every child is different. My son who is now 2.5 needs 10 hours where year ago he was a 12 hour sleeper with a chunky 3 hour PM nap. He dropped his morning nap at about 16 months. His bedtime also shifted from 730 to about 830ish and waking at about 630.
Sorry so long! I always tell parents to experiment for a couple days to see how much sleep is consistently needed and then set bedtimes accordingly to what is needed for bedtimes and wake ups. It is just that simple.- Flag
