I posted about this last week on the vent thread, but in short, I have been caring for an infant part time the last 4 months or so. However, due to the minimal hours that she's been here and her attachment issues to mom, she has not adjusted well, screaming nearly the entire time she's here. Especially if I wasn't giving her 100% attention. I knew it was coming, but I wanted to try one more time today. However, it was the worst day yet, and it proved to truly be the straw that broke the camel's back.
After half an hour of continuous screaming and crying, I had no other option than to call mom for pick up. I had tried to talk myself down and believed that I wouldn't term today, I'd give myself a minute to breath. However, whenever mom picked up and the baby was frantic to be back in her arms, the words came out before I could even stop them.
"I'm so sorry, but I don't believe baby is very happy here, and I'm concerned that her being this upset is too stressful for her to continue being in my care. She is a wonderful little girl, and I really love having you as clients, however, I'm not sure that there is anything more I can offer at this time."
Mom was completely understanding, as I believe she was at the same point as well. I don't believe she was upset or mad, simply concerned for her daughter. It was a very simple term as far as these things go. We talked for a few moments, I wished them the best of luck, apologized, she paid, and they left. I feel both sadness and relief, but I realize it was the right thing to do. Thanks to everyone who encouraged me in this matter and reassured me that I would be doing the right thing by letting this family go!
