The 3.5 year old who won't potty in the toilet finally told me something. He is afraid it's going to hurt. The other kids handled the "what to say to encourage him" fantastically. They all told him it won't hurt. They were all so kind. I was so proud of them. Don't know if this convinced him but it does make me look at the situation in another light.
