I Should Have Gone with My Gut Feeling!

So the mom who asked for a refund because her daughter was only here 4 days last week just sent me a message that she is going to take dcg to her grandparent's house this week since she can't afford to pay this week. It's in my contract that they pay each week regardless of attendance. I feel bad for her, but I have bills to pay too! So BYE FELICIA! I had a bad feeling in the beginning about this family and should have listened. You live, you learn!!

Yeah, I would go ahead and term I think. I guess at least you figured it out early in. Sometimes it is hard to know if we should trust our gut feeling or not.

A "No" to a newbie usually always forces their true colors.

Sorry you have to find a new replacement but I am glad you found out now that money was going to be an issue for this family.

Oops, I meant 4 hours, not 4 days.

I told her I am going to move in another direction. I felt like I kept having to reinforce my contract even though she said she read through it and signed it. I just had a feeling this was going to happen !

This is the second time I have had to term this month, so this year is starting off interesting LOL! The other families I have are awesome though, thankfully.

I don't know why you termed the other family, but if things are happening you can't work with, I can understand it. Do you have a trial or probation period in your contract? I have a one week one and am thinking of adjusting it to two weeks. That way when these things happen you are in that trial period and it isn't so much a term, more of a "this isn't working out".

totally trying to be helpful, but what kind of questions are you asking at the time when you meet them for enrollment?

I found that when I was asking the wrong questions or not asking the right ones so to speak I was getting some pretty crazy parents or just ones that didn't work out.

I had the other dcg for about 6 or 7 months and had to let her go because I just couldn't handle 3 babies at a time, especially this baby. Loudest, most high maintenance little person I've ever seen ! And her mom was going overboard with the micromanaging. I know it's her daughter, but she acted like I didn't have other kids to take care of! I just couldn't do it anymore. I do have a 2 week trial period and this was the second week. I'm now searching for a new dcf and I pray that I find a child and family that really fits and also respects my contract etc.

As to the first one, I try to weed out micromanagers during the interview. I just can't deal with them.

Well, that's where I messed up ha! It was actually the first interview ever because when I started my daycare last June, I already knew the families so I didn't have to actually interview them. I had all these questions written down to ask this new mom, but we chatted for a while and then she out of nowhere asked if her daughter could start the next day and I was like ummmm oh ok! I told her to read through my contract and sign it and bring it back the next day, but I just for some reason never asked the questions. I will definitely sit down and ask questions next time AND go through every square inch of my contract ! What kind of questions do you ask potential families?

Mostly I just talk to them not ask questions. I learned the hard way though, and I think we all do to a point what things to spot. Usually something isn't screaming out loud, but it may not seem just right with you. And when we are new, well we have no clue! Most of what I know comes from when I did this before and the whole host of things I did wrong then, and if in doubt I post here before I make a decision. And I NEVER let myself feel pressured to take a family on at the interview. I always tell them I will get back to them within 48 hours and that if I offer them a spot I would hold if for them for 72 hours after that.

I have a questionnaire I use to ask families specific questions BEFORE the interview. The questions are set up so that parents can not answer yes/no and must reply with more than a single word. I did this on purpose to weed out the families I wouldnt be able to work with.

I also have an interview checklist that I use religiously during the interview so I can "click off" specific items I want to make sure I've discussed and given time for the family to discuss with me...

If you are interested in either of these forms as a guideline to help you find a good fit, just send me a PM and I'll happily share with you.
