I have a new little DCB 3m that is just finishing his second week with me. He's really doing great so far and fitting into the group nicely! happyface He has had a few days where he has taken 3+ hour naps and DCD has made an indirect comment when dropping him about "don't sleep so much today, make her earn her money". The first time I just laughed it off, but it happened again this morning and is really rubbing me the wrong way. I don't know them well since the little guy just stared so I'm hoping he's just clueless and trying to make a joke, but either way I'd like to make sure it doesn't happen again. Have you had this parent? Any suggestions for addressing it?

"Well, I make $3 an hour, so if he sleeps for 3 hours, that's an extra $9...so at that rate I make almost $4 an hour! 1/2 way to minimum wage!" Huge grin! He seems to enjoy sarcasm.- Flag

I have one dad who will sometimes make comments similar. I just smile. Thankful that I only interact w him 5-10 minutes out of the week, and realize some people are just putzes.- Flag

I am good friends with a dcf and dcd said to me (when dcg stopped her morning nap): "at least now it feels like we're paying you for actual work."
His sense of humor is real sarcastic like that, so I blew it off. He didn't mean anything, hopefully neither does your dcd.- Flag

As they are walking out the door "be sure to keep Daddy up late tonight and wake him up a few times too. He needs some special one to one time with his little pookie"- Flag

I wouldn't take it personally! He is just being an idiot. Whether the boy sleeps or not he needs childcare so he truly is the idiot. Why should you be paid less for a sleeping child? That's kind of like only paying for cable when the tv is on. Doesn't work that way. He is paying you to be there for his child. Some parents LOATHE the fact that they have to pay or childcare.- Flag

I have a dad that's autistic and he says all kinds of stuff similar to that and then he snorts laughing, even when it's not remotely funny.
At first I didn't know he had autism and was getting upset by his unneeded comments, but when his GF told me it all made 100% sense.
Now I just laugh with him no matter what he says when he laughs. 😀- Flag

I would stop telling how long he sleeps.I would say "had a good nap".Sometimes parents are clueless.- Flag

Wow!! The fact that some parents actually think that way makes me sad! Make her earn her money? Is it not enough that you are watching over his child as they sleep? Cmon now, you're still caring for them, reguardless if they are sleeping or not. How ridiculous. That would *definitely* rub me the wrong way, but then again, I am over sensitive to everything ::

Your maid is probably cleaning your house from all the dc messes, handling all your paperwork and prep work, setting out snack items, sanitizing the bathroom, checking to make sure everyone is doing alright, looking for activity ideas, entering food program info or other things, writing notes to parents or thinking of what to put in the next newsletter. Good thing your maid is there.
Did you ever address it with dcd?- Flag

And mostly likely you spend that whole 3 hours laying on the couch with your box of bon-bons watching soaps.Nothing else in the world to do. Most people make comments like this because they are clueless as to how their comments sound to other people. They don't mean to be rude, words just fall out of their mouths without them thinking about it from other people's perspectives.
Let's change the conversation and environment completely ... I just had a baby almost a month ago and I can't tell you how many times I have heard the following comments from family members, friends and even STRANGERS
"Don't hold her too much, you're spoiling her"
"You're letting her sleep too much during the day, that's why she's waking up all night"
"You're breastfeeding her too much, she's training you to hold her"
"Give her some formula, you're probably not producing enough milk to fill her up. That's why she's eating so often"
"You only bathe her once a week???? Oh no, you need to bathe her everyday"
... and a whole lot of other crap that I hear.
I mean ... it's not like I haven't had 3 other kids already or like I've researched endless amounts of information about all types of medical and parenting topics and have formed my own educated parenting choices or anything. People don't think about how from my end it sounds like they are questioning my parenting choices ... parents are like this too. Even though it's just conversation they don't think about how it's irritating as hell but I doubt they mean any harm from it
