My 4 mo nephew started with me a few weeks ago. He's typically been nursed to sleep so not used to going down on his own. I didn't have any trouble the first 2 weeks. I would bounce him as soon as he started showing signs of tiredness and he would fall asleep on my shoulder. I would lay him down and then he would sleep an hour or so. We did this every couple hours. This week however he has fought sleep like crazy and when I do get him to sleep he only sleeps 25-30 minutes. They say at home he struggles to sleep, but will take a 4-5hr nap once a day. Neither of these scenarios seem healthy to me for a 4 mo. How do you teach him to soothe himself to sleep? I've tried laying him in his bed for short periods of time when he looks drowsy, but he screams his little head off. I've never left him for more than about 10 minutes b/c he's so young, but he doesn't fall asleep. Any gentle tips on how to teach him/help him stay asleep?

I find that age to be particularly difficult because their sleep habits are changing because they're coming out of the newborn stage and trying to find more of a routine.
He could very well be over tired. Max awake time is around 1 to 1.5 hours, no longer than that. He should be napping about 3 times a day and starting to sleep through the night. The more sleep he gets the better his sleep cycles will be. It could also be over stimulation and that makes it hard for them to settle to sleep because they are more aware of their surroundings. A blank wall is perfect to help settle, low noise, and no interaction.- Flag
