Has Anyone Else Seen an Increase....

Has anyone else seen an increase in children having BM problems? If so what was done to help the child to cope or over come the fear of going?

I have two that have BM issues, one is 31/2 yrs and the other is 15 mth. Both can not or will not go #2. The older one is on restoreolax(sorry for spelling) to help child go, other wise child could hold it for over a week. Second child screams in so much pain while trying to go and most times nothing is there and when there finally is its hard(parents to second child said that the sibling was the same way but out grow it).

I would want to know what they are eating and drinking that is causing the constipation. I have seen some inconsistent BM in children a lot, but it almost always has come down to their diet. I have had one child who was afraid to go, as well, and it ended up being a constipation issue (pushing too hard led to hemmroids too) and it hurt to go, so they were scared of the pain. Once they got rid of the constipation and realized it didn't hurt to go anymore, that issue worked itself out. Do you know what their diet is like?

Child one is a normal diet, lots of fruits and veggies, not a lot of processed foods, but like everyone else they do go out for pizzas and McD's the odd time.
Child two is very healthy lots of fruits and veggies, I'd say very little if any processed foods and has been put on almond milk.

Yes. The few constipation issues I've seen was not due to poor diet, but due to pushing potty training before the child was ready or parents making a big deal about the poops being "dirty", "stinky", "gross".

Also, once they have a few difficult bowel movements, they get scared to poop and hold it as long as possible causing the issue to get worse and worse.

yes because they only eat junk and their diet does not consist of enough fiber or fluids.

Here the only thing that I can do is push fluids as much as possible and by that I mean water.

I have one that just turned two that would shake and scream when trying to have a BM. I had to send home on several occassions, the child would try for 20-30min and would just scream cry and shake. this child diet consist of mac and cheese and dino nuggest because the parents claim they won't eat anything else. I don't have these issues with the child, but sadly the child is very part time so my meals are not eaten enough by this child to solve the issue.

I dont' really see this issue in my full time kids, mostly only part time kids.

Whenever I have seen BM issues it comes from too much pressure to go and holding. Then when child finally goes it hurts like all get out so then they fear the poop. I have put kids in pullups to poop. Once the fear goes away and they are pooping in a pullup then I go back to the potty. The fear has to go before they will. Having a child on laxatives is not a great idea either. Maybe they are cutting down on dairy for the constipation? hopefully it helps. Kids these days eat SOOOO much dairy it's insane. Dairy is not a "health" food.

My oldest son and myself both struggle with this issue. I really struggle with getting him to eat his vegetables, but I wouldn't mind being a vegetarian and eat a ton of fruits and veggies so I think it may be somewhat of a hereditary issue. I have other family members who struggle as well. We do eat/drink a lot of dairy b/c we are both significantly underweight and the dr pushes it for the high calorie count. That could be a factor. What works for us is taking a fiber supplement. I buy fiber gummy bears that work well. If we remember to take one a day we both are able to go without issue. When we forget...well, that' s another story.

I don't think it has much to do with 'what' they eat so much as it has to do with balance.

Eating too much or too little of any one food group can cause issues with BM's. Either being too loose or too hard.

Almost all my DCK's are organic, dairy free, predominantly healthy eaters and I have 4 kids that have BM issues.

Two of them are gluten free and dairy free (I think the kids both lack the fiber needed to have regular BM's) and both of them poo in hard little pellets.

The other two eat great. Both kids like everything I serve but the sippy cups of juice, milk and whatever else the kids want/need in their cups 24/7 (NOT at daycare) makes it so neither kid (1 in diapers and 1 in underwear) has ever had a solid BM.

So in my experience, it hasn't been what they eat but more of the lack of balance.

I have FOUR dck's on miralax. They are the worst eaters. ONE with chronic diarrhea (unlimited juice at home).

                  DIET is key!
