    Big Babies

Okay, this is my first time posting a question and I am leary because it seems almost everything is debated and posters are flamed, etc. so I'm a bit sensitive (my seemingly innocent and helpful responses are usually flamed so I'm afraid to ask a question.) Anyway, at least at first glance, this one seems pretty "undebatable" so I'll give it a go.

I know there are some of you who care for large babies because I've seen reference to it in other posts. I have a newly 7 month old baby girl dck that is about 25 lbs. Her parents cram her into 18 month clothes because she just got them for Christmas and hasn't worn them yet, but I'm guessing if her clothes were to fit properly, she'd need at least a 2T. She has exceeded the weight limit for my exersaucer and the baby swing (outside-the kind that goes on a swingset) so I don't know what to do with her during the day. She loves to sit (if her pants aren't too tight-sometimes she can't sit) or roll around and play on the floor, but sometimes I feel bad that I'm not doing enough variety with her or want to move her so the bigger kids can play with smaller toys on the floor. I don't know what to do with her. She is just a baby, but she can't do the regular baby variety. As history, when she was 3-4 months she was too big for the swing, bouncy seat, bumbo, etc.

Also, she is literally very close to growing out of the high chair. I can BARELY get the straps done and the tray is so far out that there is no way she could feed herself anything once she gets a bit bigger. I am not comfortable with her being in there without the straps, but she is still a baby and not big enough to just plop in a chair. What do I do? I have 2 highchairs and a kid size table and chairs, so a booster seat that goes on a regular sized chair is not an option (the kids eat in a separate room on my lower level and not in my kitchen). I also have 2 brands of highchairs and have the same problem with both. I've asked her mom about it and mom just says that they can't do the straps so they just put her in the highchair without the straps, which works I'm sure but I am not comfortable with that at my house.

She will also grow out of the straps of my 4 seat stroller soon, so I have to figure that out, too. She is just a big kid. She doesn't look all that chubby, but she is the size of an average 2 year old but is still a 7 month old baby. Any suggestions?

Do the parents make any reference toher size? any special diet? I wonder if her pediatrician is at all concerned? does she seem to meet all the regular/normal developmental milestones for her age? Wow! that is a big girl....

Can you tie an adult belt around her and the high chair?

Oh, one more thing, she doesn't fit in the sleep sack anymore and I am not allowed to use any sort of blanket. Right now she sleeps without anything, but I am afraid she'll be cold. Does anyone know of an XL sleep sack or anything like it?

Why can't you use any type of blankets?

For sleeping (nap time) can you just change her clothes and put her in sleeper? you know the Pajamas with feet in them.

I am also in this same boat...sounds like my 7months old twin...Im afraid to ask the parents anything about it becuase I dont know how to and they are also large people. The DCB that I care for also often wakes up with blue/purple feet or hands due to poor circulation and I want to be able to have him do things with the rest of us............

Sorry Not trying to take over your posting, just wanted to let you know your not alone on this and also would like to know what can be done....

                Hmmm.....

I have a 2 yr old that uses one of those high chairs that don't have the legs (sorta a booster for the chair?) but I sit it on the floor as I don't want to use up a chair to strap it to with arms that I feel safe walking away from.

This way you wouldn't have to strap her in, cause she can't fall off of the floor right?

I don't know what your requirements are, but what kind of milk is she on? I mean this isn't just an over eating problem. This baby is much too large, and her health is at risk. She is at increased risk not only for childhood/adult obesity, but also for diabetes etc.

All of this was discussed with a doctor/pediatrician first. Please do not do this without discussing with the parents and a doctor first!

With the bigger kids I used to have, we switched them (this was after discussing with a doctor, not just my choice) to 1% milk, or watered down 3.25% milk or 2% milk. Skim milk just has nothing to it, as it's already water, so whats the point?!
Extra water whenever you can squeeze in water do it. No juices etc.
Make sure you feed them healthy foods, nothing that they don't need.

Some babies are just chubby, and that's how they are. Mine were all sumo babies for a small time, but then they started crawling and burnt that all off fast. All my own children are now scrawny little brats regardless of how much they eat. .

As for what to do with her, you need to try figure out a safe way to keep her but allow her to move around at her will. Is she crawling yet? Once she gets moving around, the weight will melt off and as she gets taller it'll spread out.

Also what about getting her a pair of sweats or 2 to put her in? or just letting her be in a diaper and a looser shirt?

can you tell me her height and what she eats at your house? Also, can she keep her head upright and not face plant when she is on her belly?

I am sure nannyde can help you here. she is the resident expert on nutrition. I do envy the way she feeds her kids and wish I had the patience to do it her way.

On another note, I would not use any type of device that restrains her. I'd hve her on the floor moving about as much as possible. I don't use swings/bouncers/exersaucers/high chairs of any type for any child, but I especially wouldn't do it for an overweight child. She needs to be moving around to burn calories AND to develop strong large motor skills.

Thank you! Keep the ideas coming!

I cannot use a blanket because of SIDS. I thought it was statewide (I know you are in MN, too Blackcat) but maybe it's the county. Either way, it's a big deal to my licensor because she checks every time she is here. I get it, though, I didn't use blankets with my kids either.

She is a healthy baby-just big. She is not crawling yet but she rolls, sits, etc. She is meeting milestones on time, if not a little early, and she is very social (smiling, laughing, making growling noises, etc.) As far as the parents are telling me, the pediatrician hasn't said a word. She goes to the same pediatrician as my kids, too, so I do trust the opinion. But, she is very big!

She eats more than my kids did at that age but mine were "peanuts," and I was breastfeeding (she is formula fed) so that makes a difference. This is what she eats: 8 oz. bottles of Similac organic formula every 4 hours (4 bottles/day at 7:30, 11:30, 3:30 and 7:30-so 2 bottles when she is here), 1 jar of second baby food (Earth's Best) fruit/fruit combo and 1/4 cup oatmeal for breakfast, 1 jar of second baby food (Earth's Best) veggie/veggie combo and 1/4 cup rice cereal for lunch, and 1 jar of second food veggie/veggie combo and 1/4 cup rice cereal/oatmeal for dinner. She may eat a few puffs or Cheerios during the day, too, but she can't feed herself very well yet so I don't do much of that. According to mom, the pediatrician keeps saying she should be feeding herself more table food too by now, but she is young and doesn't get it yet. I kind of feel like the pediatrician might be making the problem worse by pushing food a bit. Also, she started rice cereal at 4 months old and veggies a bit after that-if that helps.

My kids probably ate rice cereal 1-2 times per day (2-3 Tbsp) and 1/2 jar of veggies at lunch at that age. However, I didn't start solids until they were about 6 months so they hadn't been eating much yet at 7 months. They also drank about 5 oz. of breast milk in a bottle every 3 hours or so while at daycare. I had teeny kids, so I guess I don't know. My daycare seemed to think I wasn't feeding mine enough so I guess I don't really know what normal is...but it seems reasonable what my dck eats. Any ideas about that? I would be okay talking to mom if she seems to be eating an abnormal amount. Mom is very willing to take suggestions and would have no problem calling the pediatrician. They just seem to think she's big and, as first time parents, they don't really have a frame of reference to compare how big she is.

Okay, nanny, I'm counting on you! She is about 26 inches (yep, I just measured her on the changing table) and 25 lbs. (yep, weighed her too). I did just list what she eats.

Yes, she keeps her head very upright on her belly and meets all milestones well. Developmentally, she is a star student!

                            ?[/QUOTE]

My DD (who is now a normal sized 2 year old) was a huge baby too. 22 lbs by 4 months old, She was exclusively breastfed until she was 6 months old, so I know it wasn't that I was overfeeding her with formula! My oldest DD was also a huge baby, and she has turned into a VERY skinny, average height 7 year old. I think it may be a bit presumptuous to assume a health problem because she is a big baby. If her doctor is not concerned, no one should be.

I found with both of my big babies that they really stopped packing the pounds on once they got mobile, around 6-7 months old, so maybe this big baby will slow down in her growth soon too. You can now buy sleep sacks in size 2-3, I saw them on mamabargains.com the other day. In the meantime, my older daughter used to play in her little sisters exersaucer just to see if she could fit, and she was 40 lbs at the time! It didn't ever break For the highchair, I would continue to use the one you have until she really no longer fits in it. She might start to slim out a bit soon, so maybe it won't even be a problem for much longer! If she really does outgrow it, maybe ask the parents to supply one that fits?

She is very very very heavy for her height.

She's in the 26th percentile in height and she is so far off the charts in weight that I can't even give you a percentage. For her height the average baby in her percentile would be about 15 pounds.

I can't really advise you on what to do feeding wise because if your numbers are correct it's not a good situation and needs to be medically supervised. There are diseases such as Prader-Willi that may be affecting this child.

It's time to have a meeting with the Mom and sit down and show her the nunmbers. Tell her you need to have an exact amount of food to give her daily. She doesn't really HAVE to be on any solids until she is eight months. She does need formula or breast milk until one. She can't have milk until one no matter what.

It sounds like the amount of cereal is VERY high. At her age she can have just a couple of dry tablespoons at lunch and just formula for snacks. It doesn't make anywhere near a quarter of a cup.

If you would like you can call me. I can p.m. you my number. I may be able to help you with equipment ideas and a rotation of "exercise" for her once I know your schedule and routine.
