I was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder some time ago. I have watched children for years since then, intermittently on medication, and would NEVER hurt and HAVE NEVER hurt or put a child in danger. I am about to go back on medication for this, as I can tell I am getting "stressed" and anxious too easily again. However, I am concerned that licensing will red flag me for this. Does anyone else out there have any experience with bpd and daycare licensing?? I can't be the only one .Please be helpful and constructive.

I don't see how licensing would ever know what medication you are taking. They would only see in a background check if you had been in some kind of legal trouble. I'm a preschool teacher and no one knows I take a prescription medication twice a day and have for years. There has never been any sort of form that asks.- Flag

I am on medication for depression and anxiety. I don't tell parents and they have never asked. It doesn't affect my work so no need to tell.- Flag

at this time I do not believe that state or licensing would require anyone to perform a medical physical to hold a childcare license.
Now, some companies may require a drug test before being hired and in that case should they test for such drugs then it may be an issue. BUT most places only test for illegal drugs.
I think you should be fine.

Here in MD we have to have our primary care Dr fill out a medical form . It does ask if they feel we can care for children .
It lists
RESTRICTED OR REQUIRE SPECIAL CONDITIONS from contact with children in care due to having any of the following:
a) Communicable disease:
b) Chronic medical condition or physical impairment:
c) Vision/Hearing/Speech Disorder:
d) Nervous or Emotional Disorder:
e) Drug or Alcohol Abuse:
f) Immunization status:- Flag

I didn't have to do anything like that. But I did speak to my therapist and doctor before I reopened and neither had an issue with my depression, ask it is under control.- Flag

Personally, I think BPD and child care is something you should discuss with your doctor and/or therapist.
I have had first hand experience with someone diagnosed with BPD and it's very unique to each person.- Flag

I agree that if you have anything like this (including my depression) this is true. If my therapist and doctors hadn't been okay with it I wouldn't have done it. I live with my issues, but they see it from the outside looking in and have a different view of how I am doing than I do.- Flag

My experience is mostly depression/anxiety. It's never impacted the children in a negative manner, in fact I think on my "bad" days I over-compensate!
Thank you again for the advice/reassurance- Flag
