For those that have used a debt collection service, how does that work? Did you have to get a small claims judgement first? And how did you find a reputable service?

Here in my state (MN) we can opt to go through the courts or we can file with a collection agency. If you go through the court system and win and the parent doesn't pay the judgement you can still file the debt with a collection agency and hope the parent finally pays since most collection agencies aggressively and/or semi-aggressively try to collect since they get a portion of the debt amount as their fee too.
I have used the court system before and had luck but can easily cite several cases where the provider didn't win so it really depends.
