So, I have a DCG who will be 2 in a couple of weeks. She has been with me since she was an infant...and she is very focused and determined. At 8 months, she would practice all day until she could stand up...then walk...then run...She was so focused that she wouldn't really play with the other kids. She had a goal, she set it, and then she accomplished it!
She is a sweet girl, and I love her to pieces. We are now starting to get into the terrible two's. She is only here twice a week as her grandma (a former daycare provider) has her the other 3 days. Recently, she has started throwing things on the ground and tipping over the small chairs. When that doesn't work, she has started screeching. I have gotten down to her level and explained that she needs to use her words (she is a good talker) and that behavior is not acceptable. I have tried re-direction, but it is short-lived until she is back in the same behavior.
I notice it more when she is hungry or tired. If she doesn't like her a.m. snack, she won't eat it all, and then she gets fussy right before lunch 1.5 hrs later. She stopped taking a morning nap, and when she hears the music go on for the babies, I can see her dragging a bit. (I can't let her even take a short catnap otherwise she won't sleep in the afternoon and she keeps the other kids awake.)
She still has a bottle of milk, and she has been using it like a paci. I give it to her occasionally right before pick-up as she is hungry for dinner and wanting to go home.
But, since we are no longer allowed to have time-outs...and the re-direction doesn't always work...what now? What are my disclipinary options? Will she understand consequences (not being able to color, etc. with the big kids)?
Due to her personality, I can see this getting worse rather quickly. I am also not sure what to say to the parents. They are good people who are very involved with their child, and both of them have mentioned that behavior to me and they immediately correct her when she does it at pick-up. It is like as soon as I tell her "no, ma'am" to one thing, she starts throwing things, ripping the corner protectors off the furniture, etc.
Advice, please!
