    DCB with IBS

I have a dcb, age young 2.5, whose parents told me he has "the child version of ibs". At least, dcm told me this, but dcd denies any issues. They don't want special, but do eat vegetarian. I accomodate because it's easy enough for me and I charge them a higher rate. At home, they actually eat vegan. I'm only mentioning this in case it sheds any light on this.

Dcb has some really miserable days. Today he had 4 bm's. Every diaper change basically. He goes around saying, "butt hurts, butt hurts." He will have an okay day or maybe two, but 3 out of the 5 days per week his bottom is miserable.

Dcd does dropoff and pickup and doesn't want to talk about it. Dcm I never see. I can text, email, or call her, but I know dcd rules the roost, so to speak.

Anyone ever deal with this? I'm almost to the point where I demand he see a doctor.

Is it really loose? Diarrhea? If yes I would require a doctors note with his prognosis and recommended diet.

Yes, loose every time. Not to the point of blow out, but by the end of the day it hurts dcb so bad I can hardly wipe it off him.

I think then I would ask for a doctor's letter. DCM mentioned he has a condition, if he does there are things that can be done. I have IBS (of course it is the adult version) and there is medication to help it. But there are other more serious things that can cause the issues also.

Why doesn't he want to talk about it? That seems bizarre to me, if it's concerning his son's wellbeing.

Anyhoo, I would ask for documentation/doctor's note/whatever you need so that you have a plan in place for the little guy. Poor thing.

I have a DCD right now who refuses to acknowledge anything about his kids that isn't 3000% positive. Same DCD also whine about everything and is unpleasant enough that the front office calls to warn us on the rare occasions he picks up or drops off. If mom wasn't awesome, I'm pretty sure they would have been asked to leave a long time ago.

If the child is uncomfortable and having lots of loose BMs without a known cause, then he needs to see a doctor. If he's already been to the doctor, then they should be able to provide documentation. Even in children, there are step that can be taken to reduce the frequency and severity of symptoms of IBS.

There are a lot of things that can cause loose stools, so you want to make sure DCM actually got a doctor's opinion and didn't just spend a night on Google.

I think it's because he is already a hitter and was kicked out of a previous dc for it - so dcd doesn't want to hear anything bad. Anything that could get him kicked out, that is.

Also, The dcd's I have in general don't like to talk about bm's. I'm always dealing with dck's constipation, diarrhea, blow outs ... it's like talking about the weather to me! ::

Do you have a diagnosis and treatment plan from the Doctor?

How long have you been dealing with this?
Yes, I would think a doctor would be a good idea!

Does he eat really good? Like he gobbles up all his veggies? I know a few vegetarians who try to feed their kids vegetarian, but they won't eat the veggies, so they fill up mostly on fruits and grains. Too much fruit can give them loose stools and if he has a gluten sensitivity, then the grains could be causing bloating and stomach pain and bad poops too. I would have them go to the doc and get a plan of action.

I was going to say the same thing- poor diet balance. Are they giving him a ton of juice? Would the parents be willing to try yogurt at home (probiotic) DAILY for a couple of weeks? If that doesn't resolve it, I would give them the ultimatum that he needs to go to the doctors and get a diagnosis for the constant diarrhea (call it what it is- runny stools aren't typical) or you will have to start sending him home when he is so uncomfortable. I send home after the second bout of diarrhea-first if it isn't contained to a diaper.

I have a dcg here who has vegan parents- she REFUSES to eat any vegetable , so they literally feed her fruit and junk (organic junk food is still junk food!) She constantly had diarrhea, I started sending her home 2-3x a week. The parents work from home so that was not inconvenient enough. I changed my illness policy, and when I did so I told the dcm that she would probably be missing more days than she was attending (24/48 exclusion rule) and that I recommend bringing her to the pediatrician.

The pedi told them- no more juice, give her protein foods (they weren't even serving BEANS or protein subs!) and he told them to add good quality Greek yogurt.

In a week there was 1 semi solid bm per day.

Nothing. That is my concern. He's been like this since he started in June. Dcb needs some help.

My son was vegetarian until he was 7 and always had loose poops. He ate very healthy, fruit veggies and plenty of protein. I took him into the doctors and she said it is common for veggie kids to have loose stools and not to worry.

Despite that, if he's saying it hurts then there is a problem and I would ask for a doctor's diagnosis.

A sore bottom since June? Yep.
"Dad, I know it's not a happy subject but dcb's bottom is really sore today. What has your doctor advised to alleviate the symptoms of his IBS? And can you provide me with the documentation on how to help him here or I'll have to send him home when he has a flare up."
