    unexpected curriculum

Just had to share our morning...one of those unplanned things you'd never expect! There was a massive downpour this morning, so we stayed inside extra long, reading. When it let up a bit, we went out for a walk to the end of the street to see the river. We stood on the bridge for a long time, watching the raging water and all the debris floating by: trees, logs, trash, a big wooden box that smashed against a tree as we watched... Wait a minute...that box was a bee hive! Then we saw more of them. I realized they must be coming from a nearby farm field, but couldn't imagine the river could have flooded that far. So we went to investigate. The farm road was flooded, and caught in the current were many bee hive parts--with drenched bees clinging to them. Then we saw something swimming against the current--and it turned out to be a rabbit! It climbed out, thank goodness. (Who knew rabbits could swim?) I tried to rescue one of the bee-covered hives with a long stick, but couldn't reach. Then a man came by, and together, he and I were able to pull out a box full of honeycomb and soaking-wet bees, and drag it up to higher ground. It kills me to think of the thousands and thousands of bees that were lost, but at least we were able to help some of them.

Off to set up some paints and paper to record our experience when the kids wake up...

I love this! I am not allowed to take my kids on walks due to licensing but I love veering away from my plans for the day when the farm vehicles are working in the field or the big dumptrucks are working on the road or airplanes are flying up above. A private owned plane flew around all morning one day this week. The kids loved it...their imaginations about who was in the plane, what they were doing, why they were flying, where they were going was amazing.

Wow, that's terrible about all the bee hives!!! Exciting and educational for the kids to watch though I'm sure!

It's been a steady rain here so far today and they've warned about flooding but since I live on a hill, if it reaches this far the whole town's in serious jeopardy.

Wait, what? You are not allowed to take the kids on walks?! That was my only sanity today, as our yard was too wet to play in because its been raining since Monday.

Sorry to get off topic, OP. Your morning sounds really interesting. It is sad about the bees though .

Yep, kind of a bummer! We can only do field trips if parents drive or walk with their own kids! Some daycares here do transport but leaving my licensed home on foot or in car is too big of a liability for me

That's crummy! Glad you can find other ways to bring the outside world to your kids...sounds like a great plane conversation.

I know...I was so glad! And glad we could save some of the bees, at least.
