I Saw This Ad and Had To Laugh

I still get emails from care.com when people in my area are looking for care. I saw this one with the pay range at $10-20 an hour, so I read the ad and had to laugh.

"We need a nanny for our 1 child in Minot. And we're looking now! We would prefer someone who could help out with light housekeeping. Responsibilities would include meal prep. Please be a fan of outdoor activities. Preference given to those who love reading to kids. I'm looking for someone to come to my home and take care of my son during the week. He is 16 months old. I work at a school and am usually off at 3. I would need to leave by 7:30 a.m. The pay starts at $100/week but may be negotiable depending on experience. Nanny with children may apply. This would be a perfect job for a stay at home mom with a child to come out and make some extra money and your child will get to have a play mate."

SEE?! Your kid will get a play mate and you get to make a who $2.60 an hour! I think she must have missed the fact that 35 hours a week at $10-20 an hour does not add up to $100 a week! Daycare in our area starts at $150 week, so I wouldn't hold my breath on finding care if I was her

Wow! There was recently an ad on our local buy/sell fb page....a single mom needed someone to come to her home and care for her 3 children. She stated that the 3 yr old boy was very rambunctious. There was also a two year old girl, and 9 month old. The schedule would vary, but the hours added up to 40-45 per week. She was willing to pay $100/week. You should have seen some of the comments she got! Then she used the "I am looking for someone who loves children, not someone who is in it for the money."

Yes, when placing ad on care.com the dcp checks boxes which completes the ad for them. Therefore, wording is same in each ad depending on checked box. At end dcp can add extra. That's the important part. Nothing's better than dcp tell me how much I'm making to sit home and watch kids. Four yrs ago I had DCD think he was funny and said "I pay you to stay home with your kid". I didn't find the humor. I was quick and replied it was "unfortunate you don't value my strict military license, Nafcc accreditation, 30 hrs of required annual training. (Long pause) I'll consider this your verbal two wk termination notice."

Well, if I don't have to use my gas, sign me up! And the kids' food is provided in their own home. How generous!

I get the most amusement out of people who want to provide childcare in their home. It is so common to see something like "I just love babies. They're so adorable. If you need a babysitter please contact me. I'm a stay at home mom and I want to cuddle your adorable babies, and kids ages 2-4 would be great too because my two year old son needs someone to play with". She may as well be saying, "you are doing me the favor by letting me cuddle your baby and giving my son someone to play with". I would think she'd be getting off on the wrong foot with an ad like that. Any family she gets will have the attitude that they're in charge since they're doing her a favor.

I did see an ad the other day with someone looking for a nanny on care.com. They have four children, the youngest was just an infant and the oldest was in school, but it was second shift so the school age child would be home most of that time. They also wanted the nanny to clean and do meal prep, pick up/drop offs, etc. Monday - Friday and they pay $150 a week. Around here they would be paying $150 just for the infant in group childcare. All four children would be well over $500 for the cheapest group daycare. Let alone being second shift which costs more, and one of them being an infant. And Nanny rates around here for that many children would be at the least $20-25/hour.

Well that's .74ร‚ยข an hr per kid.

The rate she is paying for a week might cover one day. Why would she think a total stranger would want to work four days a week for free doing the hard work of caring for three kids? Free care for a "rambunctious" three year old, two year old and infant? That person could go work at McDonald's for a day and a half and make the same money and take 5 and a half days off per week.

If she truly believes in caring for children for love, why doesn't she offer to care for someone else's three kids for a hundred a week?

It does scream of the public perception that we should work for love and not for money. Can you imagine a car dealership offering it's potential sales staff a hundred a week for 45 hours and stating that "lovers of cars only need apply". Can you imagine telling a farmer you will give them thirty cents per pound for their cow because you only want meat from a farmer that loves animals?

We need to get love out of the equation.
