Call now, mention at pick up?

I have a new dcb (3rd week) who is 3. He puts lots of stuff in his mouth. I had to pry a giant (toddler approved size) lego out of mouth yesterday, he managed to cram it all the way in and it got stuck.

Well I was just sitting next to the 3 and 4 year olds as they play with small foam dinos, They were sorting them by color, type and just playing with them. Well, dcb suddenly grabs a handful and crams them to the back of his throat! I immediately do the cpr finger scoop to get them all out of his mouth/throat and he throws up all over from the gag reflex. I changed him, we chatted, he has lost ALL big kid toy privileges. Should I call mom to let her know what happened? Normally with a vomit I would call immediately but he isn't sick... I can't believe it, I was right next to him watching him like a hawk. Super thought I could prevent it sitting right there!

Thoughts? Also - anyone else have a very oral older kid? What did you do?

I would maybe shoot mom a quick text and let her know what happened. Just kind of an FYI thing...

As for the oral stuff...yes, I've had my fair share of them (had one get half a plastic Easter egg get stuck in his mouth which I had to pry out... ) and one that constantly eats the paper off the crayons... ....I guess I manage it by just knowing who is prone to what behaviors and just try to stay on top of it... If it gets too time consuming, then I just eliminate that particular child's right to participate in that activity.

Kids are weird. You just figure out how to deal. ::

I would also be asking mom if he does this at home (or did it at his last providers). Ask how she handles it when he does this type of thing?

ditto on the text with dcm. I would maybe even write something up that states what happened that way Mom understands why kid can't play with the developmentally appropriate toys recommended for his age group.

kind of like a plan of action so that you can show you are being proactive about how you will prevent this. Obviously, the only way you are going to be abel to prevent it, is to not give him those things..

        hope your day gets better.

Go to Sensory University Toy Company, online. Get acquainted with the chew stixx line.

The site has a lot of info and solutions.
          - Unless otherwise stated, all my posts are personal opinion and worth what you paid for them.

            True story! Lol!

I would text mom a heads up, and then go into detail about your plan to keep the little guy safe at pick up. I have a guy exactly like that now...have to keep him at my assistant's side at all times.

Yes this! some kids are just extremely oral!

We had a kid at the centre where I worked that stuck paper towel up his nose constantly. One time he had to go to the DR because a piece was up there for ages and caused a bacteria infection in his sinus cavity

Thanks for all the replies. I am going to chat with dad at pick up.

                Kids are soooo weird.

Yes. Although my center primarily uses the chewy tubes from Discount School Supply. And my previous center used spiral coil wristbands (like the keychain, but with no key ring).

I have a few right now who want to eat paper towels. I have to really watch the paper towel dispenser. Those ones also mouth the toys constantly. After washing/sanitizing toys constantly for the last couple weeks, I finally thought to put in a request to our administration for chewy tubes. Hopefully we'll have some soon.

                    Update!

SO I talked to dcd at pick up. Turn out dcb has had surgery from when he tried to swallow the door off a toy car at the previous daycare! The door got lodged in his throat and they had to surgically remove it. Yea...apparently this is a pattern.

... and something you'd think they would've mentioned to their new provider... ??

Perhaps the parents "forgot" to mention it? You know, like parents "forget" to mention that their child had a fever the night before and they gave them Tylenol...

I'd be having another chat or sending an email (so you have a paper trail) and just ask if there are any other issues that you should be aware of as you are hoping to avoid a repeat scenario and any more surprises.

Honestly I would term this child, what if he does this again and you aren't right there to catch

Right?! Well the previous provider (where little brother is still at as I didn't have a spot for him) is nana. Apparently dcd's mom runs a home daycare in the neighborhood too, but she has the TV on all the time and doesn't do activities, art etc. so they wanted to transition the kids into a more structured home daycare. So it was at Nana's where the kid shoved a hotwheel door down his throat.

When I asked dad, he initially said he couldn't think of dcb ever putting non food in his mouth before. Then 4 min later, as dcd's getting dcb's shoes on he tells me the story... I was like "yes, that is the type of thing I am talking about!" Dcd said it has never happened at home . I am going to touch base with mom today on it. They are a good family, I am not going to term, but I am going to treat dcb like an infant for now. He is either next to me, playing in a center with toddler/infant toys only or in a high chair if I have to leave them room (changing a diaper etc.). He generally follows directions well and is sweet. But shoves random stuff in his mouth Hopefully I can help him break the habit.
