How To Tell A Daycare Mom

Have any of you had to tell a daycare mom that she should consider formula instead of breastmilk? How did you tell the mom? I have a baby who is 2 months old and breastfed she has a lot of stomach discomfort is very fussy! Mom has cut out dairy but there has been no change in babys tummy trouble. Mom brought me gas drops and gripe water and Tylenol I haven't given any to the baby but mom insist if she gets fuzzy today to give it to her. I just think if the baby is in that much pain she should switch to formula instead of all the medicines.

Any suggestions for me? Thanks everyone!

Formula is even harder on an infants digestive system.

I would have mom start talking with a breast feeding coach or specialist that understands this type of issue.

It could be any number of things mom is eating and not just dairy. It also takes a few days of eliminating things to truly see results.

The baby is awfully young still and could just be adjusting to life in general.

I would never suggest to a mom to go to formula instead of breast milk unless mom has tried everything possible to fix/change things in her own diet first. ....and by that time, the child would be old enough to start solids...

I'm sorry that isn't what you were looking for as far as advice goes but I believe breast milk is always best.

The only recommendation I would make to an infant's mom is to discuss the issue with her pediatrician.

        Ugh frustrating.

first off, I would not be giving the child all of that stuff without a doctors note. you should not need anything to digest your food.

I would stop giving her all of those things right now and tell dcm that she needs to take her to the doctor and let them figure it out.

I dont administer any form of medications to children while in my care.
        too much liability.

Lots of kids experience the same thing with formula. Formula is designed to mimic breast milk and has a lot of the same things in it but is less natural on a babies digestive tract.

Switching to formula is not the answer at all and might make the problem worse. For a lot of babies the only thing that works is a baby probiotic like BioGaia which you can get from the pharmacist as it has to be kept refrigerated. Babies stomachs are very sensitive so upset is quite normal. If it is dairy it needs to be eliminated for at least 2-3 weeks to see any improvement as it takes a week or two to leave your breast milk. ALL dairy needs to be eliminated as well. I have heard of moms just eliminating cheese and yogurt but enjoying cream in their coffee. That doesn't cut it and dairy is in everything. I had to cut it out for my two breastfed babies.

Hope you guys figure it out

              She needs a IBCLC.

Also talk with the pediatrician but an IBCLC would be more knowledgeable, you can direct her to this link to find one near her. http://www.ilca.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3337

Is it possible that this could be fixed by changing bottles? Or did this issue exist before bottles were introduced?

THIS!!!! It could be a lot of things...allergens in breastmilk take weeks to clear up...she could have other issues....but I'm sorry, breast milk is custom made for baby and is always the best option if able and mom so chooses. I'm all for women choosing to either breast feed or formula feed their baby but if the mother has already made this decision (and hers was to breast feed) then you have no right to suggest she does otherwise. You wouldn't tell a formula feeding mother "I'm sorry but I think you need to breastfeed b/c formula just ain't working!" It's actually against the law in some states to ask mom to switch since it could be considered discrimination/harassment depending on how she took your 'advice'.

Breastfeeding sometimes just takes time to work out kinks. DCM should go to Ped for advice, check out LLL for support.

How is the baby doing at the bottle? Is she ****ing in a lot of air? Is she over eating? Those are some of the issues I have had in the past and a change in bottle or reducing the amount of ounces and increasing the number of feeds seemed to help until they got a bit older and could take more at once. I also make sure to burp the baby half way through and after to help. Keep baby upright after feed for a bit and hopefully that will help.
