    Teething No Tylenol

Wondering how everyone reacts when they have kids come to school that are teething and in a decent amount of pain and parents don't bring tylenol. I mean I mention if you want to bring tylenol or motrin they were pretty grumpy today... may need it tomorrow and then still nothing. And then they mention they had some earlier in the morning so they give it at home but then bring them to school without any and it's a group setting and it's hard to give constant 1 on 1. I have all my babies teething at once so it's been a rough 2 weeks! One with molars and the rest with just regular little ones. And week 2 of a new girl transitioning from Fridays only to full time. She had initial troubles with relating to the babies and was being sort of rough but now she has been doing pretty well. So it's been a rough couple of weeks!

Sounds harsh, but I send them home. If they're so grumpy they can't participate normally, then they really need their mom and dad!

I dont give meds for any reason and dont allow kids to attend if tney need meds to make it through the day. Too risky now days.
Parents arent bringing it for you because they want to use it on their time.
They let you deal with the cranky, fussy baby.

I have never given a dose of Tylenol for teething pain in my 35 year career. I will not allow kids on Tylenol or Advil for any reason other than an injury like a broken bone.

            Really no pain meds?

If I sent home for teething I'd have no kids. I have 4 babies and someone is always teething! My parents would all lose their jobs. Why is it risky to give tylenol or motrin as long as it's dosed correctly and you have written authorizations?

Well I had one mom use those but they did nothing at all. I also would need them to bring that and have this on file. So same thing really and same issue probably. I could suggest if they are anti- medication but it seems they are just lazy and don't feel like bringing it in and inconsiderate of what happens after they leave.

I give the teething ones a wet washcloth(you could freeze it too) as much as possible.
I have a dcm who uses amber necklaces for teething. I asked her if they work and she said the one(twins) who doesn't wear one(her older sister took it off and broke it) seems fussier than her sister. So I don't know, just a thought.

I don't send home for teething. I send home for not being able to participate. I've had plenty of teething babies be able to get through the day just fine without meds. Honestly most of the symptoms that come with teething are due to an illness anyway and not the actual teething since they're putting things in their mouths more. Any medication has risks due to side effects, accidental overdose, etc. Nothing I want to be responsible for!

I don't offer otc meds and don't accept children into care who have had them.

Most of my dcks are fine. I also don't have dcks until they are 12 mos. I have one that I sent home for being unable to participate. She would not stop crying at naptime and would not settle. Was it her teeth? I don't know. But she was uncomfortable, couldn't settle, so off she went to mom and dad who could offer her what they thought she needed.

I just saw a study about this. Teething gets all the blame when in fact, it usually has nothing to do with why the child is fussy, running a fever or has other issues. Right now I have young SA kids who are losing baby teeth and "cutting" adult teeth. No one has complained or behaved in a way that makes me think they are in pain. In my mind if the child needs medication, then they need to be home.
I don't think the parent is being mean, they have no idea how disruptive a fussy baby can be in group care. They may not even realize the child is fussy as it's the "norm" for them. Personally I believe infants need a lot of one on one attention and thrive best when they are HOME with mom or dad for the first year for this reason.

This! When a baby teeths they put everything in their mouth. Parents are constantly rubbing the baby's gums to feel for the new tooth. All this puts germs in their mouth and they are more likely to get sick at this time. Then when the baby fusses the parents atribute it to teething and give a pain reliever that masks a fever and the sickness spreads to everyone around.

I'm curious nannyde, does being an RN influence your decision not to give otc medications? I imagine your RN license would be in danger if a child was to have a negative reaction. I'm not being sarcastic, just genuinely curious

My son really liked a frozen washcloth when his molar was cutting.
