That sunburn story made me think...sending home a letter.

I am sending home a letter today, how does this sound?

    Dear Parents,
You have most likely seen the story of 2 brothers in Oklahoma getting 2nd and 3rd degree burns while at daycare last week. This is a link to one of the many versions of the story on ABC News: http://abcnews.go.com/Health/boys-de...ry?id=32760831

This is a horrible incident of negligent providers and completely preventable. Although this sort of injury is not something that would likely happen here at _____, I have been thinking all week about ways to better care for your children in regards to the sun and outdoor play.

Sun care is something I take very seriously. I am a big fan of sunscreen! The sunscreen I use is 50 SPF and water resistant for 80 minutes by Babyganics. I know there are higher SPFs, spray on, water proof, etc. SPF, Sun Protection Factor, is a measure of a sunscreen's ability to prevent UVB from damaging the skin. If it takes 20 minutes for your unprotected skin to start turning red, using an SPF 15 sunscreen theoretically prevents reddening 15 times longer — about five hours.) So SPF 30 would be 10 hrs and SPF 50-100 wouldn't last forever due to bathing, etc. However, if you would like your child in another sunscreen please bring them screened up in the morning and bring a bottle of your choice for me to reapply as needed. We can't use spray sunscreen at daycare according to the Office of Childcare.

These boys obviously did not get slathered in sun screen, nor was it reapplied every 2 hours. My policy is to apply sunscreen before heading out and reapply after 2 hours, though we have not spent more than 2 hours at a time outside since May I think. We also play outside in the morning and as much as possible in the shade.

    Hats!
I would like all parents to include a light weight sun hat for wearing outside for the remainder of summer, to stay at care. These hats are great for protecting the delicate skin on ears as well as the scalp. Several kiddos are very comfortable with hats but for the others, we'll work together to make hat wearing fun and routine. Please bring your child's hat, to stay at daycare, on their first day of care next week. I know Costco has some that are UPF 50+ and have little vents for $10 or less. The strap isn't necessary if the hat fits well enough for staying on while running.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the care of your child(ren), please do not hesitate to ask. It is a joy spending the day with your children and I want them to be safe and healthy as much as you do.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

Honestly, I would not start out with the news story about the two boys or anything about that. What I have in my contract is a list of things the parent has to bring including sunscreen (30 spf) so I don't have to ask for it later and a sun hat (I like that part). You don't want to sound like you are defending your dc or yourself. Unless a parent tells me that they got screened up at home I just awesome that no body has and I' am very through. I have had a few kids (red heads) that were super sensitive to the sun so it made me much more aware of sun care.
