Mosquitoes at My Home Bothering DCB

So dcb, a young 1, is having a terrible reaction to mosquito bites at my home. I won't deny - they are awful this year and I live in the woods. Mosquitoes head for this dcb like you would not believe.

He was having this issue and we didn't know what was going on, and then the doc said it was mosquito bites. Then he was gone last week and had no issues. So it's definitely happening here.

Dcm showed up today in tears. I get it, it's her baby. I love dcb and his parents - they are model parents. But the only answer for me is to have a company spray. That is $130 each time, and has to be done every 3 weeks.

Dcb is part time, so .... He only comes 3 days a week. I would probably need at least 2, maybe 3 sprays. I'm willing to pay for the first time but ...after that what do I ask dcm to pay? If I have to pay $260 in a month for the service, it's almost like dcb's tuition is paying for the mosquito spray.

Is she sure they are not getting him at her house?

I dunno, it just seems a bit petty to think it's happening only at your house and not at home as well.

In my experience, mosquitos lovethis ALL kids, especially those under 2 that have soft flesh. Almost every.single. kid I've had that age swells up horribly and my current 18 month old has his left eye darn near swollen shut from a bite over the weekend.

I don't know maybe I am a bit jaded since I live in MN and the mosquito is our state bird ::...like I said, I dunno but if I were you, I'd suggest DCM invest in some good bug spray and keep DCB covered before I'd offer to have my yard sprayed. Here, that would be like hiring a snowplow company to come while it's still snowing.... kwim?

Mosquitos = part of life here..... kind of like air.

Do you put bug spray on him when you got out? What kind? After a neighbors kid had a horrible bug bite (became infected) while using "natural" bug sprays, their doctor told them those kinds of sprays are mostly worthless (and my own research bears that out) and they needed a spray with DEET, especially if they were in the woods/ camping etc. I spray the kids clothing and shoes before we go out.

Is the child wearing long sleeves and pants and a sun hat? in this case I would make sure of it - making sure he changed when inside and doing cool activities while outside.

If you've already done those things and he's still being eaten alive, I would have the yard sprayed. I consider it the cost of doing business and write off the expense. But we've had encephalitis and other mosquito borne illness in our area and I'd be uncomfortable with not doing everything I could to prevent.

I can't spray the backyard because of the chickens and ducks, so I just spray the kids down before we go outside.

I live in ND and had the same issue earlier int he summer. We bought spray at home depot for like $12 and it did wonders for our yard. We don't have a huge yard, but they were a nightmare back there. Between the yard spray and a quick spray of each kid before we go out, the bites are almost nonexistent now. I really don't think paying hundreds to spray your yard is necessary.

I agree that mosquitoes are everywhere, and it's our state bird here, too. I lived in MN for awhile and the climates you and I have are identical. Sometimes I even get more snow! I'm in a part of MI with tons of lakes, rivers, and woods. And I live in a huge snow belt. Oh, lucky me! ::

But for whatever reason, dcb only seems to be having issues here. It's easy to test because he isn't here Thursday-Sunday.

My other dck's have a few bites, but nothing like this little guy gets. They just look infected.

Okay so ... model dcm just said (nicely) that if I didn't want to spray the yard, she would have to consider pulling him.

I was going to spray the yard, but I don't like being backed into a corner either, so now I want to tell her to go jump. Talk me down, please.

I am definitely doing all those things.

                  Deep breaths

She's a model dcm. She was in tears over the bites. I get the impression you know the bites are from your yard. I hate being told to "do this or else" even nicely. But in this case I'd **** it up, spray the yard (they sell the backyard "foggers" at Home Depot) and let it go.

Breathing, breathing ... No, I definitely don't like being made to feel like I am being threatened. Even nicely

Do you think the feeling of being backed in a corner is something you can move on from? If not, then I would let her pull.

I grew up in Ohio and was always eaten alive by mosquitoes (still am as an adult) and I have horrible reactions to them. If you wouldn't or couldn't spray I would likely pull as well. As a parent I would understand why you couldn't spray (not exactly cost effective in this situation). But as someone who gets eaten alive I can tell you it is awful.

Just be honest. "Dcm, I understand your concern and would like to fix the issue. However, since this issue seems to only be affecting your child, it is not financially feasible for me to spend $xxx amount of money to spray my yard. If you would like to meet me in the middle and pay for half of it, I would gladly pay the other half. If that is not going to work for your, then I understand your need to pull little johnny form my care and wish you the best in your future daycare." Or something similar to that. Personally, I don't like being threatened, no matter how nicely, so I would tell her I will pack her stuff up for pick up at the end of the day and best wishes!

I spray my own yard with Cutter Bug Free Backyard, and it does great for mosquitoes and ticks (we have a waterway behind our home). I'd just give that a try, and be sure to use a bug repellent with DEET in it for the child.

Definitely I can move on. But the other kids don't have issues. So ... I'm losing out on money since all of his tuition would be paying for mosquito spray.

I checked into the foggers - the cheaper options - they don't last more than a day or two.
