    Relatives and a Bounced Check

I watch my cousin's child for a couple hours a week, and they recently paid me with a check that bounced. I just found out the check bounced today. I'm certain that when I mention it, they will be mortified and will pay me back, but I want to make that conversation as un-awkward as possible. They did mention having problems with their account and paid in cash this week, but it was last weeks check that I just received back. I've never talked to this relative on the phone regarding daycare. All arrangements to care for their daughter were made via facebook private message. Do you think I could just casually message them and mention that they owe me for services plus the fee the bank charged me? Its a small amount of money. If it came down to it, I would just forgive the amount they owe, but I do want to mention it to them. Any suggestions on what to say?

I would just send a message to them. Example: your check you wrote me last week was just returned to my bank. I remember you mentioning you were having issues with your account, so if it is easier you can bring me cash and I will return the check to you. The bank charge was $. Thanks.

That way they can very easily, and with minimum embarrassment, get you your money.

If you think they would be that embarrassed I would send her a message. Considering that's how they made childcare arrangements for their most precious possession. If she doesn't answer back or make things right ASAP I would give her something in writing at pick up with the amount and date due in order to continue receiving care.

If you didn't want to confront them, just take the canceled check your bank sent back to you and go to their bank. They can cash it for you if there are funds available. They can also tell you over the phone if funds are available, if you tell them the account number and amount of the check. You won't get your bank fees back unless you ask your cousin, but if that's up to you.
