    Anyone ever do outside naptime?

I was considering trying it this week since it is going to be so hot and I don't have AC. I have a gazebo and it makes a very nice sized shaded area so I was thinking about it...opinions?

I think it depends on the kids. I have had a lot who would never take a nap because they were outside. When I was a kid though mom used to let me go to sleep outside when I was little and dad would carry me in to bed.

It sounds like a fun idea if you can get them to sleep. You could pretend you all are on a camping trip.

I've tried it, but never with any success. (Well, that is for the whole group. All my infants napped outside on a regular basis.) But it was because it was all too new, I think. I wonder if it were your regular routine, if it would work. I think it would be great if it could. Let us know how you make it work if you do!

We had a camping theme and it was super fun. We set up a tent and the kids all passed out.

It was super hot out so I did have to end up brining everyone inside.

If it's super shaded I would otherwise it will be hotter outside. At least inside you can run fans.

We've done it a few times. Never had much success with actual napping but the kids enjoyed it.

I've been to trainings where they suggested it.

                And I inwardly ::::::::::

Not to stereotype but the presenter is usually a Birkenstock wearing crunchster who talks in a sing song voice about how the kids just love being outside all the time...

And we get outside every day for hours, some free play but mostly structured play (provider led games, nature walks, centers, etc). Because I just find the kids get BORED, or complain about the heat, the bugs, etc. Even with lots of offerings I still get kids trying to sneak inside.
For once I just want to get these kids that love the outdoors as much as TPTB seem to think they do...

In your case I'd get the kids out all AM while it's still somewhat bearable. I'd have all my shades closed and fans going crazy. I'd probably do something cooling before lunch (water table, sprinkler, etc) lunch would be an already prepared cold plate (sandwiches with applesauce or slices, carrot sticks, etc - no hot foods) and then off to bed while they are still cool from waterplay - inside where they'll actually sleep::

I did once. I have a really nice shaded area under 3 huge pine trees in my backyard and one day last fall it was sooo warm and very breezy (and pretty loud with the breeze-good white noise . I couldn't bring myself to come inside- I wanted to be out all day. I only had three 4-year olds who often don't sleep anyways, so I wasn't worried about it. We brought out the cots and pillows and blankets, no one slept, but it was so peaceful. I'd do it again!

Heck no! I can't get mine to sleep well inside - there's no way they'd sleep outside.

Some days are just so sunny and warm that I've been very tempted to try an outside nap. Never had the nerve to actually do it, though. I've never had an entire group of kids who would lay down long enough outside to fall asleep.

So I did it and it actually didn't go too bad. It took them longer to fall asleep but they all did and they slept for their normal 2 hours and it was pretty nice.

How wonderful! That must've been so nice. I'm "outdoorsy", so I would love that....I have doubts about my current group, however. Lol

Yay! Glad it worked for you!

                              Have you tried it again?
