    Should I?

I just found out that out of my 6 dcks only 1 will be in attendance on Monday. Should I ask the family if it would be ok if I close and take a vacation day? I want to be fair and if they need care I'd remain open. I am going out of town and would get back late on Sunday night so it would be nice to come back on monday instead. I don't know if it's ok given the short notice. If so, how do I phrase it with the family? If not I'll just stick with my plans and have an easy day.

Depends on your relationship with the family. I have some families I could ask, others I never would.

Would you still make them pay?

I would stay open and have a low key day. Let little one play special things, watch a movie, maybe go grocery shopping and out for icecream. It would be a day of treating them as my own

I would ask, Or at least let them know she will be the only one in attendance. Because what if you come back, and they say if we would have known she would the only one, we wouldn't have brought her. Or they call you and cancel at last minute because they are not working, then you returned for nothing.

          Just tell them the situation.

"I planned on being open on Monday, but it turns out that your child is the only one attending that day. Would you be willing to make alternate arrangements for your child (you could add in a benefit here) in exchange for...so that I may have another day with my family?

that be great to have the extra day
my only concern would be if the other families that are not coming are still paying for the spot .......
and if you ask for the day off for the last one , would you have to give back the money ,....and not the other families ???
            tricky one
if me I would REALY hint on the only one for that day ...see what happens ..if if they come then off to do some special stuff ...
            tell them TODAY ....

I would casually mention "Looks like he'll be my only one Monday!" Some parents will offer to make arrangements. If not, just me personally, I'd be open for them. I'd feel awkward closing with short notice. I enjoy days with just a kid or two. We do things I can't normally do with a group. We shop, eat lunch out, etc.
