    Interviewing When Full

Let's say Ihave a kid that I want to get rid of, I'm full, but interview anyways because I want to get rid of this one hellion. What do you say to prospective parents about why I'm interviewing? I am always being asked how many kids are here, are they all full time, etc. so what do I tell them when it comes time to tell them I want to get rid of this one kid? I don't want to come across like I give up care at the drop of a hat, but don't want to trash talk child either and you never know who knows who. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

If they ask why you're interviewing, I would say only that an opening is becoming available (target date you want to get rid of kid, or date new parent can start). You don't need to say why it's becoming available at all. For all the parent knows, maybe the child's family is moving or a child is going off to school or because summer's coming, a child is being watched by grandma or an older sibling. See all the things it could be? No need to explain

That's what I say. Simply, I have an opening, beginning on xx/xx/xxxx.

Yup. I have an opening available X date. (I give it three weeks out, one to finalize paperwork, and notice for the child I am replacing). Ive never had a parent question it further.

you don't need to give any reasons why....it really is not any of their business.

          what is your contract terms?

mine is 30 days, so people can leave at any time during those 30 days, things change. people move, people change job hours that I can no longer accommodate, and so on.

If you wanted to answer the question you could just say, we will have a family will that be moving on, the spot will become avialble for you on xxx date and leave it at that.....

That's what I'd like to say, but it seems like when I don't give a valid reason (mat leave for example), parents seem suspicious. I always get asked why someone is leaving, it doesn't seem like just saying a space is opening up really cuts it here. I guess (now that I am processing as I type) that I should just give this family notice then interview; but then I lose the income if I don't fill that spot right away. Gah!!!! Vicious circle. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I always tell parents that things can change so quickly and unexpectedly in family child care. I've had parents lose a job, get injured and have to quit a job, quit a job to go back to school, lose a grandparent who was transportation, etc, all at a time when I thought I wouldn't have any openings for a while.

I don't mention it at all. I have a clause that says that I can cancel a contract at will for any reason so if I'm replacing someone I interview a new family and wait until I find out the new family's start date (and have a contract signed) then I give the other family notice.
